Education and Learning From Many Aspects

Reflecting different perspectives from experienced writers of education topic on Medium

I am sure all of us have some fond memories from our school years. And I believe some of us are still studying, and most of us keep learning. Education and learning are lifelong goals. Schools are just a start in the process.

Education is a tool that we use to create our reality. I spent 25 years of formal schooling believing it was the way to learn knowledge. When I completed my doctoral degree, the only thing I learned was knowing nothing. Spending almost half of my life on formal learning brings kind of regret as the return on investment is not justifiable.

The key knowledge and skills I acquired from such extended schooling were advanced research methods and techniques. Hands-on research helped me rewire my brain and gain learning skills. The real learning had started after my formal education.

Training, instructing, coaching, and mentoring are related terms to education. I have tried them has all. My favourite activity remained mentoring. I do it free as a giveback activity. Altruistic activities may bring as much or even more pleasure as commercial activities. Mentoring includes both giving and receiving. I learn a lot from my proteges in the process.

For me, apart from hands-on trial and error, teaching and writing are the best ways of learning. Teaching reinforces our knowledge, so does writing. In my opinion, writing can be considered as a hands-on learning method.

Every individual and profession needs education. We survive and thrive by learning. Education can be both formal and informal. Adults and children learn differently. I shared an outline of prominent adult learning theories.

As part of my studies in cognitive science, I invested a lot of time in education, especially on how formal and informal learning shape our brains.

I learned in my research that formal education is not essential for the 21st century, whereas informal education is critical. Therefore, most of us still undertake many technical education courses using subscription services. Vendors also sponsor free online courses. For example, I shared some free online technology courses.

Digital media changed the way we learn. We used to spend our time by reading books, articles and papers, but now most of us listen to audio-books. I still read a lot of scientific papers, articles, blogs. However, I spend substantial time listening to podcasts and watching educative videos. I find audiobooks convenient.

I studied meta-cognition as part of my cognitive science degree. It is about learning how to learn. The key points from these studies were the importance of focus, concentration, memory, task switching, and problem solving. Without these essential skills, it is not possible to learn sustainably.

Adding information to long term memory and converting it to knowledge also requires substantial emotional attachment to the content we consume and digest. Thus, in addition, to focus, giving meaning to information with emotions play an essential role in acquiring knowledge. I shared an outline of my research on knowledge, skills, and competencies of technical professionals in a story.

Even though my significant studies were related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), I also undertook some HAAS (Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences). I introduced STEM education in this article inspired by focus and progress in Virginia earlier today.

The pandemic changed the delivery modes for education. For example, most courses are still conducted using online education services like Udemy or teleconference services such as Zoom, MS Team, and Cisco Webex.

Education is a popular topic in my publications. As a result, I came across to a vast number of stories related to education, learning, teaching, and school systems. In this story, I compiled some of them from my reading list. Unfortunately, there were many more stories that I was unable to include due to time constraints and to keep this story in a reasonable size.

Education is a topic I never lost my top writer status in as I keep posting related stories continuously. Medium has tags to store and distribute education and learning stories. The tags page shows 340K stories contributed by 136K writers.

Learning is also a tag including 76K stories contributed by 43K writers.

Most of the stories I featured were distributed to topics under education.
