Summary

The article contrasts the rigid structure of traditional education with the dynamic, user-driven nature of the internet, suggesting they are not interchangeable but represent parallel worlds that can coexist and complement each other.

Abstract

The author reflects on the dichotomy between the education system, which is often perceived as restrictive and outdated, and the internet, which offers a realm of freedom and contemporary learning opportunities. The article argues that while the education system provides a structured environment that teaches resilience and discipline, the internet allows for self-directed learning and real-time contribution to various fields, including technology and social media. The author posits that the internet is not just a repository of existing knowledge but also a platform for creating history and shaping the future through innovation and digital entrepreneurship. The piece emphasizes that the internet and education system are not mutually exclusive but can be leveraged together to prepare individuals for the evolving demands of the modern world.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that students often feel a lack of choice in both the education system and the workplace, which can lead to a disconnect with the subjects they are required to learn.

The Internet Is The Complete Opposite of Our Education System. They Are Not Alternatives. They Are Parallel Worlds.

My Live stream this morning sparked this story.

Let us face it. Many of us share a love-hate relationship with our education system. We have been through days where our spirits are slowly dying away as classes trudge on, and we wonder when that final bell is going to sound.

Then, there is freedom after that.

If there is one thing students and office workers have in common, that would be a choice. Maybe, a better description is a lack thereof.

Office workers do not get to choose their projects, tasks, colleagues, working desk, down to the clients they work with. Students do not get to choose the subjects that they want to learn.

I will make you a bet, and I am confident I am going to win this bet. History will be voted out. Social media content production will be voted in. That is if a voting system-based democracy exists in the classrooms.

By and large, students are more excited to learn how to game the latest algorithms to have higher views and exploding comments. And, before we get into the social media addiction piece, let us stop there.

No, it is not about that. It is about resonance.

Many students can resonate with the identity of a social media influencer. I cannot say the same for Mathematicians, Physicists, Geographers, and others.

Do not get me wrong, I do not look down on these professions. I am just saying there is a world out there, beyond the walls of our classrooms.

Our current education system represents structure and traditional knowledge domains that have led the human race to 2021. The internet contains what we knew plus what we are currently advancing.

The internet allows us to make history every single day. And yes, history is not contained in the history books. The internet has matured to a point where computer science and technology have become the point of cross-border contention. Remember Tik Tok? We are more likely to get engaged in technological warfare than pushing armies to occupy vast hinterlands.

Bits can travel faster than armies.

And you see, we want to do something. With the internet and smartphones, we can do many things with touch-and-tap technology. We can type, shoot a video, code, trade stocks, blog, vlog, communicate and contact people we never met. We are on the move.

We contribute.

That is difficult as students. In fact, it is a stark contrast. The job nature of a student is to receive. The figure of authority throws the balls, and we have to catch them. Most of the time, we do not because we are busy throwing virtual into the internet.

Freedom. Structure.

There is a lot we can learn from the internet and our education system. Yes, they compete for attention, but they do not have natural enemies.

Through structure, we learn to deal with ourselves when it comes to things we do not appreciate. This is part of our life journey. No matter how much we hate to work for a living, we have to work for a living. We have to do it, no matter what. If we do not like it, tough shit. Suck it up, baby.

Through freedom, we learn that we can do what we want to, so long as we know what we want. If we aim to become digital entrepreneurs, we have to learn all things digital. It includes social media, blogging, shooting online courses, hosting webinars, and promoting affiliate products to our community.

They are 2 different worlds, mentalities, and skillsets.

Our ability to handle both of them in parallel will allow us to thrive this decade and beyond.
