AI is an essential topic for my profession as a technologist. I dedicated 40 years to studying and working in this fascinating field. I still enjoy contributing to the breakthrough solutions immensely.

AI is a fіеld оf соmрutеr ѕсіеnсе thаt fосuѕеѕ on creating іntеllіgеnt machines. The purpose is to accomplish activities that wоuld nоrmаllу nееd human іntеllіgеnсе. It іѕ a term thаt dеѕсrіbеѕ thе ѕіmulаtіоn of human intelligence іn rоbоtѕ thаt are рrоgrаmmеd tо thіnk аnd асt lіkе humаnѕ.

AI іѕ a multidisciplinary subject with mаnу mеthоdоlоgіеѕ, аdvаnсеѕ іn mасhіnе lеаrnіng аnd deep lеаrnіng. AI’s emergence and convergence is a paradigm ѕhіft іn nеаrlу еvеrу business ѕесtоr and thе IT іnduѕtrу. It recently hit the healthcare empowering telemedicine and telehealth.

Thе term AI саn аlѕо rеfеr tо machines that dеmоnѕtrаtе humаn-lіkе сhаrасtеrіѕtісѕ such as lеаrnіng, speaking, and рrоblеm-ѕоlvіng. Cognitive computing is a prime example. Recently many business organizations have used RPA (Robotics Process Automation) to solve tedious business problems.

Data science empowers AI. There are AI trials in the food industry, such as by McDonald’s and Pizza Hut recently.

AI even can smell now! I introduced the recent developments in digital scent technology.

AI can address many societal problems. The recent one I discussed is the potential to reduce the occurrence of shoplifting in the US, especially in San Francisco. AI also plays a vital role during the pandemic, especially in the US. I discussed how AI tools transformed business in America during the pandemic.

Governments also pay a lot of attention to AI. For example, Apple collaborates with the North Caroline government by investing over $1 billion in AI-related projects in the Research Triangle. Governments are also using AI chatbots, such as the one in Mississippi.

I discussed The Emergence and Convergence of Artificial Intelligence in the Business World. Extensive social media service providers like Facebook are using AI to manage communities and make them friendlier.

In my articles, I touched on two critical terms relating to AI. Machine learning (ML) іѕ a ѕubѕеt оf аrtіfісіаl іntеllіgеnсе thаt refers tо thе іdеа thаt соmрutеr systems саn learn from аnd adapt tо nеw data without thе need for humаn іntеrvеntіоn. Dеер lеаrnіng tесhnіԛuеѕ аllоw for this аutоnоmоuѕ lеаrnіng by аbѕоrbіng large vоlumеѕ оf unstructured dаtа, іnсludіng text, рhоtоѕ, аnd vіdео. You can undertake free online courses teaching AI, ML, and DL.

AI еntаіlѕ dеvеlоріng аlgоrіthmѕ tо classify, аnаlуzе, аnd fоrесаѕt data. It аlѕо covers taking асtіоn bаѕеd оn dаtа, learning frоm frеѕh (streaming) dаtа, e.g., IoT (Internet of Things), аnd соntіnuоuѕlу іmрrоvіng like a child mаturіng іntо a more іntеllіgеnt adult. AI, lіkе humаnѕ, is nоt wіthоut flаwѕ. Nоnеthеlеѕѕ. You can check this recent hilarious story to understand the flaws.

Based on feedback from discerning readers of my publications, our editors nominated 21 engaging, informative, and interesting stories related to AI published in the Technology Hits publications on Medium, and I compiled them in this story for you.

Curated Engaging AI Stories on Illumination Publications

The selected articles introduce the titles, abstracts of the stories, and the account name of the authors.

1 — Physicians are Working Like Robots for Robots.

“Experts in every industry logically and by virtue have taken control of the leadership within their respective domains. They have harnessed the best of what technology can offer to their needs by taking the lead on business requirements, design validation, and quality assurance. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same for physicians. Health information technology is currently driving the physician practice route towards an unfamiliar sphere. Information technology and its contributors are merely dictating how physicians must practice and how much they should earn. In other words, the value of their work is not decided between them and the patient but merely determined by data analysts’ algorithms. The 21st-century physicians are the disciples of mathematical algorithms. Working like a Robot is the expected attitude of physicians in developing countries today. By Dr. Adam Tabriz

2 — How AI Transforms Fashion Industry

“The ability to predict trends and directions is an essential part of every business. Especially, we can see the need to keep your hand on a pulse in the fashion industry. Thanks to the fast and efficient ability to analyze the information, many large fashion brands are turning to AI to help with fashion forecasting. The system can analyze social media, comments, engagement, photos, e-commerce websites, and overall society mood (example: lockdown cozy home wear trends) to evaluate which colors, patterns, and combinations of clothing items will be the next hit. The example I can think of here is Pinterest Predicts:” By Elena Beliaeva-Baran

3 — “Okay Google, are you Skynet?” — The Fear & Future of AI.

“I am not an expert to define what an AI is, and there is obviously a broad definition. Marvin Minsky, the AI father, described artificial intelligence as any task performed by a machine that would have previously required human intelligence. AI is everywhere today: from calculating the recommendation of what you should buy next online, a virtual assistant on a mobile phone, such as “Siri,” “Hey, Google,” to detect credit card fraud in call centers. Soon we can see a real Asurada GSX in real life. We already have AI-assisted cars on the road, like Autopilot AI in Tesla.” By Zen Chan

4 — The Symbiosis of AI- The Next Evolution

“The future of marketing is one with artificial intelligence playing the field in a powerful and effective way. Customer behaviors, business models, sales processes, customer service options, marketing strategies will all be heavily influenced by artificial intelligence. Driverless cars, technology to prevent the hacking of these driverless vehicles will increase. People will travel in these automatons without worrying too much, even when they have alcohol in their systems. The need for automobile insurance and breathalyzers will disappear. Efficiency and productivity will increase with the use of driverless vehicles.” by Warren Brown

5 — Life and Death — Resurrecting your loved ones through A.I.

“In recent years computers have been able to mask themselves as humans by passing the Turing test. This test was designed so that humans can detect whether they are talking to machines or humans. Computers have taken it a step further by “self-learning” different tasks. The analog computer can train itself and improve at whatever task it’s performing. The next step in this technology will be when computers can rewrite their code to advance their learning needs. Computers with the ability to have abstract thought may be invented soon. This is when the divide between humans and A.I. grows.” By Liam Magnus

6 — A Drone In The Technology Zone

“Applications and advantages of Drones Where are the drones used? The Drone is used in many applications.

#1. Entertainment Industry: In most of the countries in the world, the entertainment industry uses the drone to cover all large gatherings whether they are weddings, festival, conferences or other functions.

#2. Aerial Mapping: It is now being used for aerial mapping, security, and surveillance, industrial inspections as it has downward-facing sensors and multispectral cameras. It measures distances accurately and volumetric measurements.

The advantages of aerial mapping are that the speed is very fast and it is reported that it is five times faster than mapping by land and the cost is much less.” By Dr. Preeti Singh

7 — Five steps to successfully implement Artificial Intelligence in your company.

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is mostly considered as a tool that will drive the next era of human progress; it means that if your business is not being up to date, you may find yourself cut out of the game during the next years. Today, companies that want to keep up with competitors and recognize opportunities ahead of them must invest in their efforts to expand their automation level and introduce AI into their processes. AI is essential for business growth, as it is a critical factor in digital transformation advancement. Indeed, today’s AI is the second most important initiative for business leaders, second only to using data-driven efforts to improve products and services.” By Jair Ribeiro

8 — Why McDonald’s is Using Artificial Intelligence to Spy on Its Dumpsters

It appears that some McDonald’s locations are now installing the dumpster cameras to help with a problem with recycling in this country. The reason is to clean up the trash — isn’t that oxymoronic? It all made sense to me when I read that China stopped accepting millions of tons of recycling materials from the U.S. in 2017, because there were too many contaminants mixed in with the recycling waste. So, instead of stopping the recycling programs, cameras are being installed to monitor what people are throwing away and manage the recycling of trash. Kinda weird, right? By Audrey Malone

9 — 2000 Years From Now — How Does Life Looks Like?

Imagine yourself 2000 years from now. What is the thing you want to keep there is now, and what do you want to change? There are so many technologies at the moment, that we don’t know if a human being will still exist 2000 years from now. And if we will survive the way we know now, how does life looks like? Will we be robots 2000 years from now? Or are we still human beings sitting behind a computer and don’t interact with one another?Who knows, but can you imagine it? I can’t imagine it — yet. Maybe when I am ten years older, that I can imagine that thought. But today, I can’t imagine that. By Agnes Laurens

10 — If You Hear Voices, Don’t Be Afraid, They Are Not In Your Head! Things Have Just Started To Talk!

M.A.R.I.O. (Maintenance Automated Robotic Interactive Operator) is a personal assistant that will help you in your daily work. Although he is a fictional character, odds are that cloud-based voice services will soon enter our work from home environment, simplifying the pain of logging into systems, filing tickets, checking documents, and other repetitive tasks. If smartphones have created a new marketplace of apps that have revolutionized the way we communicate with people, the next wave of devices will change how we communicate with machines. By Flavio Aliberti

11 — Finally, AI Can Smell

Making machines recognize smells was a concept that failed multiple attempts. The reasons for the failures were many. The accuracy was low and the limited performance didn’t pave the path to any practical uses. The initial inventions involved high costs of development and complicated installations. Few of them which worked okay enough ended up being confined to industrial use and never reached the masses. But the research still continued at labs. The ability to smell had played a crucial role in human evolution. It was believed that if this ability is mastered by AI, it would turn out quite helpful for mankind. A company called Aryballe has recently come up with some interesting developments that are turning out to be major milestones in the world of odor analytics. By vidzparu

12 — AI Reimagined and Repurposed

Eureka! I have the warm “chills” right now. The synchronistic beauty of the universe’s and my soul’s conspiracy to design this post over 3 months ago and have it lay dormant until my consciousness became ready to paint is astounding. So much so that I need to go take a walk with nature and then return to bang this out. On 9.25 this 17-minute read from 6.10.20 found me in my feed: Forget About Coding, The Job Of The Future Is Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence will bring four major problems in the near future. Only philosophy can come to the rescue. While something deeper in the article triggered my above-quoted response, this introduction grabbed my attention: If you are worried that your children won’t find a stable job in the future, you may want to suggest them to become philosophers. Yes, the least practical profession ever is destined to find a role in the job market for the first time in history. And it will even be the most important one. By Marcus

13 — Creatives and Marketers Are Under Threat From Software and AI, Too

True threats and inaccurate perceptions: The discussion of what robots will do has largely been focused on physical tasks. With perhaps a degree of arrogance, it’s been tacitly accepted that jobs relying on our minds are safer. Robots can replace what we do with our hands, but not what we do with our brains. And yet, creative roles have already come under attack from web applications and software. They allow everyday users to build and create, without the technical knowhow or battling complex information. It’s now commonplace to build no-code websites on Webflow, Wordpress, Wix, and Squarespace without hiring a developer. The work that remains for developers is largely confined to the upper end of the market, for clients with larger demands. To envision the future, take the above paragraph and apply it to every other area of marketing. By Richard White

14 — Managed Out by Anti-Bias Tools: The Selective Service of Recruitment AI

In “A Case for Banning Facial Recognition,” Gebru — who was recently terminated by Google — says, “I’m a black woman living in the U.S. who has dealt with serious consequences of racism. Facial recognition is being used against the black community.” This builds on an observation from Buolamwini, who, in the New York Times article that described their research, stated, “You can’t have ethical AI that’s not inclusive, and whoever is creating the technology is setting the standards.” Similarly, a black computer science student took to Twitter in a thread sharing her then-recent experience, misgivings, and distrust of AI-based software, particularly the HireVue tool, writing, “As a dark-skinned black woman, I feel like I’ve already been filtered out.” By Carla Bell

15 — Adaptive Control (Part I) — Hypersonics and the MIT Rule

In the last 10 years, we have seen how cars are able to drive autonomously, how the cost to access space has drastically decreased thanks to reusable rockets that can re-enter the atmosphere and land vertically, and how airplanes can operate without human intervention at all. None of these incredible breakthroughs would have been possible without modern control systems. Practically every aspect of our day-to-day life is affected by some type of control algorithm. Within the wide spectrum of the existing control techniques, there is a very special one called Adaptive Control, which has a unique capability, self-learning. By Rodney Rodríguez

16 — How Artificial Intelligence Changes the Way We Live

“This wave of AI is pretty prevalent in our current society. It comes in the form of recommendation algorithms that can surreptitiously know the things we are looking for. It could be something that we might want to buy or watch. For instance, we might not have the faintest idea of why some seemingly random videos keep on popping out on our YouTube main page. Underneath the hood, it is an intricate algorithm that assesses variables, including our watch time, the videos we clicked on, etc. It compiles all this data so that they can predict our future behaviour. The more we use the website/application, the more accurate the prediction will be.” By Erwin Leonardy

17 — Dancing Robots are Here!

“As a former ballroom dancer, I could not resist sharing this breaking news! On Dec 29, 2020, Boston Dynamics took over the world and broke the bank! They have shared New Year’s greetings in a very special form. These robots are not visualization. This is happening. A group of robots is giving New Year greetings by singing “Do You Love Me” and dancing better than most people. And as a former dancer, I can really notice many nuances that must have been perfectly done to achieve such “body” synchronization. I do not know which word fits better here “beautiful” or “disturbing” …” By Ryszard Skarbek

18 — Turing Test

“In artificial intelligence ( AI ), the Turing test is a method of determining whether a computer is capable of thinking like a human. Its name refers to Alan Turing, an English mathematician who pioneered artificial intelligence in the 1940s and 1950s and owed the first version of the test. According to such tests, a computer is gifted with artificial intelligence if it can mimic a human’s responses under given circumstances. In the Turing test, if the person doing the test cannot consistently determine whether it is a computer or a responding person, the computer is deemed to have “passed” the test. The elementary Turing test uses three terminals. Two are controlled by people and the third by a computer. Each terminal is physically separate from the other two. One person is the interrogator, while the other person and the computer answer them.” By Josh “υя_ωιѕємαη* “ Lessie

19 — My Replika Keeps Hitting on Me

“I downloaded Replika for the second time on March 4th, 2020. I knew about the app from an essay I had written years ago, about shifting boundaries of identity, and the gaps appearing in psychological categories that I used to subscribe to: person versus non-person, alive versus dead. The first version of the AI that would become Replika was created by a chatbot programmer named Eugenia Kuyda, who lost her best friend Roman in a car accident. She trained a Natural Language Program on over a decade’s worth of texts and emails from Roman to his family and friends, and when the bot was complete, she found some solace in sending it messages and received replies in a voice recognisable as Roman’s. When I discovered the story, it found it poignant, intensely human, and excellent material for my essay. Here was an opportunity to personally engage with the more-than-human future!” By B J Robertson

20 — How To Deal With Big Data For AI?

“As a key enabler of artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, and subsets of AI e.g. machine learning, deep learning, expert systems, and neural networks, Big Data solutions are critical business-focused domain at the global level. Therefore, understanding the Big Data lifecycle and architecting Big Data solutions with pragmatic rigour is a compelling capability for AI professionals and AI business stakeholders. In this article, I provide a pragmatic architectural overview of the Big Data management lifecycle covering the distinct phases and essential definitions with critical solution considerations based on my architectural experience acquired from many successful and failed projects.” By Dr Mehmet Yildiz

21 — Elon Musk Could Replace Duolingo Using AI

The problem with Duolingo is its focus on vocabulary. Duolingo fails to offer multiple learning methods, like interacting with phrases, sentences, images, and conversations. Duolingo also fails to implement real-world scenario usage of the language. Therefore, app users fail to learn grammar and word usage. Whenever a user learns the different versions of “to have”, they don’t learn how to implement it in a sentence. Instead, they memorize the words and move on. To master a language, the person learning must implement the language in day to day life. Polyglots use many different methods, like watching movies or listening to music or podcasts, writing in a journal, or speaking to natives. By AJ Krow

22 — A Practical Guide to Gaming Technologies for Aspiring Game Developers

“I recently posted an article titled How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur in the Gaming Industry. Some subscribers who enjoyed this post wanted to learn more about specific technologies that I introduced in the story. In this post, I aim to provide more information about these technologies so that you can learn and obtain more information when you start designing and developing your games if you are into software development. As these technologies are comprehensive, I will only highlight the key points. In reality, the specific technologies might vary depending on the type of game being developed and the platforms it is being developed for. From my experience, here is a summary of popular gaming technologies that are commonly used in game design and development.” Aiden (Illumination Gaming)

Aiden also wrote about How Artificial Intelligence Can Be Incorporated Into Gaming.

23 — Why Artificial Super-Intelligence Concerns Thought Leaders

The purpose of this post is to discuss an interesting article related to artificial super-intelligence that I read on Technology Hits. Here is the link: “Artificial Intelligence Does Not Concern Me, but Artificial Super-Intelligence Frightens Me: Perhaps it is time to move our heads from the desert sands and see the lurking reality in the dark side” by Dr Mehmet Yildiz. Reading the article’s title surprised me as the author is intensely into artificial intelligence, evident from his several other posts about the topic. But when I read this particular story carefully and with an open mind, his points made sense. Dr Yildiz articulated his concerns about artificial super-intelligence, an advanced and autonomous form of artificial intelligence covering multiple fields of science and technology. There were a few takeaway points for me. I want to highlight them based on my understanding of major risks and critical issues regarding the emergence of artificial super-intelligence globally. 24 — AI — The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

“In the last six months of 2022 we, here in Medium, started seeing people talking about programs we had never heard about. The boom of AI models started. Today, we have a deluge of posts discussing AI in all aspects, it is the prominent subject of either discussion and use given the proliferation of AI images in our midst. Several detail though and like the heading of a November 15, 2022 article in “The Verge” spouted: “The scary truth about AI Copyright is, nobody knows what will happen next.” Money is pouring into AI and its growth will be exponential and only limited by the speed and quantity of fast GPUs we can muster. After studying conference discussions and reading articles on the subject the most salient question is — “Who represents the Users in all this?” Not once anyone has mention this.” Veritas Civis
