5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Marketing Major

How to succeed in the field of Marketing

In May 2021, I will have officially graduated from college obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Science with a concentration in Marketing. Going into college, I wasn't sure what field I wanted to study. I started off as a Liberal Arts Major, then finally decided to transfer to a Business Undecided Major. While taking an abundance of business classes, I started to really enjoy my Marketing classes. In my first semester of sophomore year, I officially became a Marketing Major.

By taking Marketing classes, you learn the importance of building long-lasting relationships with customers, transcribing insights into tangible results, and using different communication tools to deliver brand awareness. Marketing is made up of many factors that all include price, product, place, and promotion.

Throughout my Marketing career, I have worked in many retail stores, been a social media manager for a small business, and have had a Marketing and Business Development Internship. These experiences have helped me gain knowledge about Marketing that you can only get from the real world. While currently being in a period of graduating from college and trying to find a job, I have noticed some important pieces that the real world has taught me. These are the five things I would tell my Freshman year self.

1. You Need Work Experience Before Graduating

If you ever have applied for a Marketing job before, you know one of the most important factors to have is relevant work experience.

Having an internship or suitable work experience is a crucial step in order to obtain a job. Most job applications require the applicant to have 1 or more years of experience in that field. Having experience will help you form problem-solving skills and gives you a sneak peek into the field. This can be a make or break for some job recruiters in choosing you as a candidate. This was one of the main things I wish I knew in my freshman year of college.

2. Have Skills in Graphic Designing

If you want to go into Digital Marketing, a graphic design software will give you an advantage.

From my experience in Digital Marketing, knowing programs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Illustrator will definitely set you apart from other people. These graphic design tools can be used when working on different articles, YouTube videos, websites, business cards, or packaging. By knowing more skills, it will benefit you in the long run.

3. Communication Skills Do Not Go Unnoticed

Communicating effectively will help you differentiate yourself and form new relationships with people.

Communication skills will help you in interviews, in your writing, and in different types of projects. These skills include listening, verbal language, problem-solving, organization, teamwork, social skills, and creativity. Also, a big part of communication is non-verbal communication. These skills include body language, eye contact, gestures, and appearance. By practicing these skills, it will make you stand out and make people remember you.

4. Marketing is Quantitative

If you decided to go into the Marketing field because math was hard for you, think again. One of the main requirements of going into Marketing is being able to communicate graphs or insights to your client effectively.

Marketing research is a big part of why companies need a Marketing Department. Marketers are sometimes hired to develop diagrams about the companies websites, how many products sold, how effective a campaign was, or different budget strategies for advertisements. Another important quantitative tool in Marketing is SEO work. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is used to try to increase traffic to a companies website to increase the website ranking. These sometimes require the use of Microsoft Excel to import data or different number-orientated programs.

5. Networking is Everything

The final thing I wish I knew before becoming a Marketing major is networking is the most important mechanism to participate in.

Many people might not want to hear this but forming relationships with different people in the industry will increase your chances of finding your dream job. When a position is open, a candidate who has put themselves out there to meet people in the company will most likely get the job over someone who did not network. Some tools in order to network effectively are to create a LinkedIn account or to participate in different webinars or events in your field.

These are the five things I wish I knew before becoming a Marketing Major.

Marketing is not just about trying to sell a product or service to someone. It encompasses a whole realm of unique requirements that some people may not know.
