I Wasted 4 Years In College
Where I didn’t even go to the convocation

Before anyone comes after me and said “you are wrong about the college thing, I have a great time in college”, read the title again. It begins with “I”. It is my personal view about college. I’m not generalizing it. Some people might feel different about college and I respect that. As for me, this is what I felt. There are 4 reasons why.

I am majoring in finance. There are many differences between what I learn from college and what I learn in real life. There is one thing that bothers me. In college, you are taught that if you want a bigger reward, then you need more risk. I always thought that every risky investment will have a high return. That’s not it. Maybe, some of the high-risk investment gives high rewards but most of the cases, it is not. There are more to that theory. They don’t teach you how to properly analyze the financial statements in college. To be honest, I learn a lot by reading finance books such as “The Intelligent Investor” by Benjamin Graham. After I read it, I’m shocked by the fact that you can find a great investment with high rewards and minimal risk if you learn to. Risk and reward are not necessarily correlated. I know more about investment after college than being in college. 2. They don’t teach you money in college
I remember this exact time where my lecturer asked students in our class what our dream is. This is a class full of finance student and all I can hear is “Finance Executive” “Finance Officer”. Nothing like those comes to my mind. I want to be someone who knows about investment because I find investment fascinating. I want to be an investor but I don’t say that, I follow the herd and said Finance Executive. Okay, there you go, following the herd or system. They don’t teach you money in school. They teach you how to get a job. That’s the system. This is what Robert Kiyosaki said and I’m 100% agree with him. After college, you are supposed to have a job. They knew that if they teach people how to make money, most people will realize that a college degree is not necessary at all. Look at Bill Gates, he is one of the richest people in the world. He has no degree. I have nothing against the education system. If people love studying or learning in college, go for it. Have fun! As for me, it is not. I’m more curious about how people get rich and I get nothing from college. A 9–5 job will not make you rich. I guarantee you that. 3. Experience is more important than a college degree
Here comes a hard truth. I have been in a circle of family that saying I can get a good and high paying job if I study hard and pass with flying colors. I have this mindset that as long as I’m passing and graduated, I will get a high paying job. It is not. The real-life begins after you finished school, they said. That’s more than true. Nobody care if you have a degree. People care more about whether you can do a job or not. Another word is experiences. I wonder how fresh graduates will have 2–3 years’ experience. Do people want us to work while studying to accept us into their organization or what? I have been rejected by so many big organizations because I lack experience. I’m not bragging but I’m one of the bright students. I’m smart and intelligent but who cares, right? 4. The purpose of studying and learning
I hate studying in college. I hate classes. I hate tests, quizzes, and final exams. I always skip classes and learn at the very last minute for tests or quiz. Don’t get me wrong. I love learning. I love it so much. The difference between self-education and formal education is the purpose of studying. I have this mindset before that as long as I’m passed with flying colors, that’s it. When it is near the final exam, I will study so hard and memorize things. The goal is; don’t fail. It is not the same with self-education. I learn something because I’m curious about it. I try to understand it instead of just memorizing it. I learn a lot of things even without those tests and final exams. To be honest, I don’t understand what I learn in college. I don’t even remember it. “Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is. The only function of a school is to make self-education easier; failing that, it does nothing” Isaac Asimov Almost anything you can learn by yourself. We are living in a world full of information. There are so many books out there. You can choose what topic piques your interest and learn about it. You can learn from YouTube videos or podcasts. Amazing, right? There is no excuse not to learn.
