5 Things I Will & Won’t Miss About Going to School In-Person

I‘m going to be chilling in bed while I grind out this degree 📚.

“This Fall, all lecture and seminar/discussion classes will be 100% online mostly using a combination of Canvas and Zoom tools,” read the message sent to students from my college.

I’m kinda looking forward to this. No more having to drive through traffic to get to school. No more having to spend $50 on a parking permit. I don’t have to wake up as early to leave.

As cool as it is to be able to watch Zoom lectures and grind through my classes from the comfort of my room, the convenience factor doesn’t overlook the fact that there will be some things that I’m going to miss.

Yet, there are also some things I‘m glad I won’t have to deal with during this period of remote learning. It’s going to be an interesting semester for sure, so I felt it would be fun and therapeutic to list out some of the stuff I won’t be seeing as I grind out this degree without having to step foot onto campus.

5 Things I Will Miss 😞

1) Breakfast Burritos From My Favorite Food Truck

No more breakfast burritos. This Sucks.

Usually, I would hit up the L&T Catering food truck on my campus to order a breakfast burrito. Sure, I save money and sure I can cook up my own breakfast burritos…but it’s not the same. Their breakfast burritos never disappoint, and I’m going to miss not being able to indulge in them for a while.

2) The Mundane Interactions Between Me and the Student I Sit Next to

We go about the whole semester saying nothing more than,

  • “What’s up!” *followed by a fist bump*
  • “See ya later!” or, “Have a good one!” *followed by another fist bump*
  • And the occasional, “How did you do on the test?”

I find it pretty hilarious yet awesome to be cool with your classmate for a whole semester, while not knowing anything about them beyond their first name.

3) Saying What’s Up to An Old Classmate/Buddy When We Pass By

It’s nice to bump into an old friend on the way to class. We dap each other up, catch up a little bit with what’s been happening, and then go on with our day. Little encounters like these can brighten up the day just a tad bit.

4) Campus Events

From Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, to Nick Vujicic, a motivational speaker born without arms or legs — many inspirational figures from around the world come to my school to speak about their experiences and stories.

Along with a plethora of different campus events, it’s a bummer that students won’t be able to have these fun and inspiring experiences.

5) Chilling In the Library

The library is probably my favorite place on the whole campus. Aside from holding a wide selection of books, it holds desks and semi-private rooms for students to study in, computers with those bulky old-school keyboards, and a separate “quiet room” filled with chairs and footrests — perfect for taking a nap in between classes.

Overall, the library has a relaxing atmosphere, serving as an oasis away from the stresses of class (assuming you’re in there to chill instead of to study).

Although a meditative space, the tranquility of the library can get interrupted when the occasional goof talks out loud obnoxiously on their phone…leading me to the things I won’t miss about going to school in-person.

5 Things I Won’t Miss 👋

1) People Talking Out Loud In the Library

If you answer a call in the library, I figured it would be common etiquette to step outside or at the VERY least, whisper. I get it, you have a potential job interview on your hands, but the whole library doesn’t need to hear it.

I also won’t miss the people who listen to music on full blast, to the point where those noise-canceling headphones are not doing its job. Like how the hell are you typing out an essay while listening to Drake on full blast?

Me, or the students sitting by you, don’t need to hear your “in my feelings” playlist while we’re trying to relax or study in silence.

2) The Anxiety of Searching For a Classroom and Finding a Seat While Everybody Stares

ASC 130 is where my class is located. I’ll be able to find ASC 129 and 131, but where the hell is ASC 130? I suddenly lose the ability to find my classroom on the first day of school. Maybe I’m just an idiot, but my comprehension for searching for the right classroom flys away.

When I do find it, I then have to deal with the anxiety of picking a seat, while everybody stares as if I’m in the wrong classroom.

I don’t want to sit next to the group of people who seem to already know each other, I feel like I would just interrupt their chemistry. I don’t want to sit in the very front because everything just feels too close. I don’t want to sit in the very back because I feel like I can’t see or hear as well.

As you can tell, I’m picky about where I sit so that in itself is something I will not miss.

3) The Icebreaker Challenges Professors Make Students Do On the 1st Day of Class

  • “Find a classmate with the same birthday month as you”
  • “Find a classmate who has a pet hamster”
  • “Find a classmate who shares the same shoe size”
  • “Find a classmate who’s ambidextrous”

Geez, professor.

You might as well ask me to find someone with the same first and last name as me too.

I always found these icebreaker challenges ridiculous and anxiety-inducing. I get that they’re supposed to “break the ice/ease up” the classroom tensions and nervousness on the first day.

Yet, no matter how many of these I do, I will always hate them.

4) Hauling Ass From Track Practice Straight to My Next Class

I’m amazed at how I and my track teammates are able to sprint a gut-wrenching hill workout, and then go straight to class right after. Although I’m impressed by this feat, I definitely won’t miss it.

It’s a pain in the butt to have to haul my ass from the track all the way across campus to my class. It’s a whole other workout in of itself! On top of the fact that my legs are hella tired, along with the sun gleaming down on my face as I build up a sweat, I’m already dead by the time I sit in that chair in class.

5) Being Stuck In a 2 to 3-Hour Long Lab

Don’t get me wrong, some of the experiments in my lab classes are pretty dang interesting.

But it’s crazy to think that I could have watched Toy Story 1 and 2 during that timeframe, or that Eliud Kipchoge ran 26.2 miles in 1 hour and 59 minutes (Faster than my class!).

My poor attention span — probably due to my affinity for instant-gratification induced by technology — makes it harder for me to focus for such a long period. Plus, It gets annoying when my stomach starts growling for food, especially if the lab class is around lunchtime.

A Strange Time

It’s going to feel a bit strange not having to go to school, and possibly graduating from the comfort of my room.

Either way, thinking about the negatives and positives of this situation helped bring forth a bit of comfort and normality to this unusual time.
