Interesting Scenario, But Not Funny

Concerns about limitations put on editors to publish stories of passionate writers for a significant publication

Writers love writing.

Readers love reading

Editors love editing.

Publications aim to amplify the content of writers.

Platforms are designed to support publications.

These personas have different roles and responsibilities for content development, distribution, and consumption; however, conflicts never leave them alone. They keep popping up out of nowhere.

In this story, I reflect upon three specific conflicts in a simple scenario.

Conflicts between writers and editors.

Conflicts between writers and publications.

Conflicts between editors and platforms.

Editors work hard to address the demands of writers.

Unlike the commercial world, editors on Medium spend their precious time voluntarily.

There are no incentives and monetary support for editors, as mentioned in the attached story.

Here is the scenario!

Warning: it is not funny.

An editor wakes up early morning, supports his kids, and meets the demands of his family.

After walking his dog with altruistic thoughts, the editor wants to support his favorite publication. He loves volunteering to help writers and readers.

He logs on to his PC and checks the publication submission queue.

He thinks:

Oh my god, there are hundreds of stories. What a wonderful thing for this publication to receive so many submissions! Readers will be delighted by reading these fresh stories today”.

He sips his coffee and aims to publish as many articles as possible as the kids are busy, the dog is happy, and the rest of the family is away for a birthday party.

He starts reviewing a few stories starting from the bottom page, focusing on the submissions in specific order to give a fair chance to the writers who submitted their stories earlier.

Many other editors are still sleeping on the other side of the globe.

He thinks:

Probably they will be late today, considering they worked hard yesterday to publish over 500 stories. Glad it is Saturday, no work today.

He is excited to inform his fellow editors he cleared one-third of the submissions when they were asleep.

More submissions come from writers of the awake part of the globe.

After publishing a few articles, [bang], an awkward message on the screen appears.

Image screen capture of error message created by Medium publication system

He reads the message multiple times and tries to understand what it really means.

He knows that Dr Mehmet Yildiz gave him full editor access because Dr Yildiz trusts him and appreciates his volunteering support to their writers and readers.

He thinks:

Editors should not have limitations for publishing their stories. Probably I did something stupid.

Or there must be something wrong with the system.

He clicks on the OK button and reads another story, corrects the typos, spelling mistakes, and minor grammar errors, formats the article to increase the curation chance of the writer, and he even writes a half-page of recommendations to the author to consider updating the story for a better reader experience.

He clicks on the PUBLISH button, and the same annoying message occurs.

He is an optimistic editor.

He naively believes that this simple system error will disappear soon.

As a precaution, he reboots his machine.

After feeding his kids for lunch, he logs on to the publication screen again aiming at publishing stories in the growing queue which he cannot even count the number of stories waiting to be published.

He checks the email for alerts and sees many complaints from writers.

The first message says:

Dear ILLUMINATION, I submitted a story about four hours ago and it is still not published. What is going on? Why is your publication so slow? Don’t your editors care about the writers? Dr Yildiz told us ILLUMINATION had 33 editors to publish quickly. Please get back to me ASAP confirming you published my story. It is not acceptable

The good editor, caring for the writer, responds with courtesy and politeness.

Dear sir, thank you for reaching out. Dr Yildiz is right. We publish quickly. We are doing our best to publish stories in our growing queue but we have some technical issues at the moment. We are unable to publish your story immediately.

A response arrives in five minutes from the impatient writer, saying:

Excuses, Excuses! Guess what, I am going to withdraw my story and not going to publish with your publication again. Enough is enough! There are many publications that can publish my work. Goodbye!”.

The disappointed editor leaves his computer and decides to have a walk to clear his mind. When he returns, he makes another cup of coffee and starts the publication editing page.

After optimistic attempts for several hours, the message persists.

You’ve reached the limit for stories that can be published in one day. Please try again tomorrow.

The submission queue keeps growing.

He decides to reach out Dr Mehmet Yildiz via a Slack message.

Dr. Yildiz shares a link with him in a message with a smiley face icon.

They both laugh at this situation which is not funny.

Dr. Yildiz texts and pings as many editors as possible.

Fortunately, the publication has many more editors in different geographies.

Editors from awaking part of the world come to the rescue.

They start melting the queue to make their writers and readers happy.

ILLUMINATION is transforming to help writers to thrive.
