Why Is Magnesium Not Just Another Mineral?
Two-thirds of the population in the world do not achieve the recommended daily allowance for magnesium. Deficiency problems contribute to health conditions.

One of the best things that happened to me in 2022 was learning about Medium. With only a $5 monthly cost, I am able to read limitless high-quality articles from top writers on multiple topics.
To this end, I came across articles by Dr Mehmet Yildiz, who writes about health, mental health, fitness, self-improvement topics, and numerous other subjects that I am yet to explore on Medium.
In addition, he wrote several articles introducing remarkable nutrients and supplements. I read all of them as my fitness coach also recommended some of them, like NAC and creatine, which I will introduce in other videos.
However, my favorite article has been the one about the health benefits of magnesium. In fact, he authored two articles. One was about what happens if you don’t get enough magnesium and another one is about six forms of magnesium as a follow-up article to the first one.
In this video, I introduce the second article as it significantly impacted my health.
I didn’t know nearly two-thirds of the population in the western world was not achieving the recommended daily allowance for magnesium, and deficiency problems were contributing to various health conditions.
The key finding for me was magnesium plays a critical role in 300+ metabolic activities in the body. Dr Yildiz highlighted in the article that “we need magnesium for reproduction, protein synthesis, the regulation of muscular contraction, blood pressure, insulin metabolism, cardiac excitability, energy production metabolism, DNA repair, neuromuscular conduction, vasomotor tone, and nerve transmission.”
After reading the article, I got curious as the story mentioned magnesium’s sleep and stress management benefits. I never took magnesium seriously. I thought it was just another mineral, and we get it from our food.
Since my childhood, my parents have filled my dinner plate with copious vegetables. I only consume a maximum of 20% of them. I still struggle eating broccoli and kale, which my mum serves almost every dinner thinking they are powerful health foods. I believe her, but the taste does not appeal to me.
Obviously, I was deficient in magnesium. After reading the article, I approached Dr Yildiz and asked him whether he would recommend any brand, including all forms of magnesium he touched on in his writing. He abstained from suggesting a specific brand but mentioned some practitioners’ brands given after a health assessment of a qualified naturopath.
I decided to go to the health shop with a naturopath in my suburb. The naturopath listened to my medical history especially suffering from insomnia. She showed me a few magnesium brands with tablets, including high magnesium intake. The tablets were too big for me to swallow.
She said no worries. Then she brought a bottle of magnesium powder with cherry flavor. It included these six forms of magnesium mentioned in Dr. Yildiz’s article. Each serving had 600 mg of elemental magnesium.
I decided to purchase it as it was affordable. The first night when I tried it, I slept so beautifully and woke up fresh. First, I thought it might be a placebo effect. However, after trying it for a week, I noticed that this high-quality magnesium compound did wonders in reducing my stress and giving me sleep I missed for many years. I fell into sleep quickly and woke up fresh every day.
Who could have known that such a simple supplement could significantly impact my debilitating sleep disorder? Furthermore, even though ingestible magnesium causes digestive issues, it did not cause any problems for me.
In addition, as I learned from another article by Dr. Yildiz, called wonders of Epsom Salts, I purchased a magnesium spray from the health shop as advised by the naturopath and used it after gym workouts. The spray format reduced my muscle pain quickly.
In addition, my recovery time significantly reduced after skin intake of magnesium. Perhaps, my nighttime drinking of magnesium powder also improved my recovery. My next goal is to try Epsom salts bath. I will let you know how it goes.
I attach the article links for your review but would like to mention six forms of magnesium he mentioned and included in the powder format I use. They are Citrate, orotate, threonate, glycinate, and malate.
