The Rise, Fall, and Rise of Fall Guys
Fall Guys went from the most popular game in the world to a game no one plays anymore, back to the most popular game in the world.

My First Encounter with Fall Guys
Back in 2020, during the first main Covid state of emergency, my friends and I became very bored since we just had to stay inside.
By the middle of the year, we had already played multiple games together and got bored of most of them.
We even got bored of Among Us, which was a very trendy game at the time.
But then we heard about a new game called Fall Guys.
Initially, when I saw the game, I thought it was just a mindless game for little children since the appearance was very non-threatening and colorful.
It was also around $30, which I thought was very steep for the type of game it looked like.
But one of my friends informed me it was temporarily free on Playstation as long as you had Playstation plus. So I downloaded the game and got into a party chat with a few of my friends.
Initially, the game seemed very boring until we played a few rounds. That’s when I released it was a very competitive game that relies heavily on precise coordination and skill.
Let me explain what the gameplay consists of.
Introduction to Fall Guys
You play as a cute little round character from the third person view.
At the beginning of a game, you are required to either complete a challenge or race everyone else in the lobby to the finish line.
Only a certain number of people can qualify for the next round, so you have to be quick.
If you don’t qualify, you get eliminated. Which means you’re out of the current game. If you qualify, you move on to the next round.
There will be a few rounds with different races or challenges until one winner rises above the rest.
My friends and I religiously played this game for a few weeks since we just loved the competitive nature.
At the time, Fall Guys was the highest trending game on most social media platforms. Most YouTubers and Twitch streamers were playing this game.
Temporarily it took over the gaming world. But for some reason, the game’s popularity suddenly plummeted after about a month or so.
Around that time, my friends and I were still playing, but it took longer and longer to find a game until we eventually stopped playing.
But then, in 2021, Epic Games acquired Tonic Games Group (the parent company of Mediatonic). Which meant Epic Games owned the rights to Fall Guys.
Epic Games essentially did what they did with Rocket League. They acquired the company behind the game and attempted to improve and re-release it.
Just like Rocket League, Fall Guys was removed from Steam and re-released on the Epic Games store.
But instead of a $30 price tag, the game became free-to-play on the 21st of June 2022. Due to Epic Games’ free-to-play re-release, Fall Guys instantly started trending again.
I kept seeing world record runs of Fall Guys’ race maps on TikTok. I sent the videos to my friends, and we all decided to give the game another try.
Just like in 2020, Fall Guys was just as fun. It has the same competitive nature with the addition of new content, items, and features.
I was actually just playing it with a few friends right before I started writing this story.
Not only is it a competitive game, but also, if played with friends, it can be hilarious.
My stomach started hurting from laughter as I watched one of my friends mess up the same obstacle repeatedly.
I’m really happy to be playing this hilarious game again.
Final Words
Fall guys went from the most popular game in the world to a game no one plays anymore, back to the most popular game in the world again.
I think it’s fascinating how that worked out. And it’s all thanks to Epic Games improving and re-releasing the game.
