Let’s Talk About Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games
Introducing Throne and Liberty and Ashes of Creation
Purpose of the Article
In this post, I briefly introduce MMORPGs to those new to these types of games. In addition, I share my opinions and the progress of two upcoming MMORPGs: Throne and Liberty and Ashes of Creation.
What is an MMORPG?
An MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) is a type of video game that combines characteristics of role-playing games (RPGs) and open-world multiplayer games.
Generally, most MMORPGs require the player to team up with other players who may be roaming around the world to complete certain quests or defeat bosses.
Almost all MMORPGs allow the player to customize their in-game character. However, usually, most MMORPGs will have character progression throughout the game.
Character progression in our character’s level, strength, skills, and other attributes. This is usually done by progressing through the story, completing quests, defeating bosses, and participating in the game’s PvP (Player vs. Player) aspects.
Most MMORPGs also have a vast open world to explore. Players are free to explore the generally large map while completing quests, gathering resources/items, and meeting other players.
MMORPGs also have certain classes players can play, such as DPS, Tank, and Healer.
DPS’s role is to deal as much damage as possible to the enemy.
Tank plays a part is to catch the enemies’ attention while the DPS players deal damage.
Healer’s role is to heal and empower their allies.
Benefits of MMORPGs
In my experience playing these games can bring many mental and emotional benefits to players. They contribute to skill building while giving joy to the gamers and reducing stress.
For example, these types of games may enhance creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills. In addition, these games might contribute to developing communication skills.
Gaming friends mention that these types of games might also reduce anxiety for beginners contributing to their mental health.
The first MMORPG: Throne and Liberty
The first MMORPG I’m looking forward to is called Throne and Liberty. The trailer is promising. Throne and Liberty is an upcoming MMORPG developed by NCSoft.
Initially, it was supposed to be a part of NCSoft’s Lineage series. Instead, it is a sequel to the first Lineage game. But after a few changes, it now has its own story.
Gamers on social media speculate that the game could release around the fourth quarter of 2022. However, that is not set in stone in my view, as the game has been delayed numerous times in the past.
Throne and Liberty will use a classless system which is pretty uncommon in MMORPGs.
Our class will depend on the weapons we use. There will also be no “Holy Trinity,” so it won’t include traditional roles such as DPS, Tank, or Healer.
Recently, NCSoft released a very promising trailer, which I watched on YouTube.
In the trailer, some of the open worlds are showcased, and in my opinion, it looks fantastic.
The trailer also showcases a few combat characteristics which seem fluent and fun to play.
Near the end of the trailer, the PvP wars were also showcased, which could allow certain factions to take control of territories similar to other MMORPGs.
The last few clips of the PvP got me very excited since it looks like players can summon bosses to help fight on their side. You can check the Throne and Liberty website for details.
The Second MMORPG: Ashes of Creation
The second MMORPG I’m looking forward to is called Ashes of Creation. Ashes of Creation is an upcoming MMORPG developed by Intrepid Studios.
The game is speculated to be released within the next year or so. Still, it could take longer since the developers are taking their time and considering the communities’ opinions during development.
Ashes of Creation is intended to be an MMORPG where our actions permanently impact everything. Therefore, I believe the Ashes of Creation will be a “unique take on the MMORPG experience,” as mentioned in the gaming communities.
The site mentions, “Cities will rise and fall as you shape the world of Verra. Gone are the days of a static world; change is here to stay!”
The NPC (Non-Player Character) structures can be destroyed by players, which can pave the way for new developments, populations, and change.
Players will also experience massive warfare, participate in epic trade caravans, and gather valuable resources to create legendary items.
The creatures around the world will also pose a constant and fresh challenge. Ashes of Creation, unlike other MMORPGs, will have seasons that will change after one or two weeks.
The environment will change along with the look of particular creatures. Some resources will also only be obtainable in certain seasons.
