Why Everyone Unfollowed Me Today

I am worried about why all my followers deserted me overnight.

Purpose of the Story

Dear Writers and Readers,

I had a worrying surprise today.

Something unusual has happened to my account.

Honestly, I am shocked since I’ve never experienced something like this before on any platform.

I am relatively new on Medium. I joined the platform early this year and posted my first article on January 9th. Then, I became a paid member on January 29th to be able to read stories.

When Medium accepted me to the partner program after gaining 100 followers on February 9th I got thrilled and started contributing.

However, due to the tax file issues (which caused delay for the approval by the system), I was not paid for three months.

Fortunately the issue was fixed and finally my stories earned $3. Interestingly, it did not allow me to buy a coffee to celebrate as a cup of coffee in my country is $5.

But I am still grateful as I don’t write for money on Medium.

Medium is an educative platform for me to improve my writing skills. My goal is to meet writers, editors, and readers for collaboration.

Joining Illumination Integrated Publications excited me as I found the readers and writers collaborative.

Readers inspired me supporting my videos introducing writers on YouTube.

Today’s Concern

My account showed around 800 followers yesterday.

I was delighted to see readers follow my modest account despite I couldn’t contribute much recently.

However, when I logged on this morning to do my editorial jobs on Illumination, my profile showed only one follower as copied below.

I had no clue so far why it happened.

Let me elaborate on my recent duties on Medium.

My Recent Focus

Due to hectic editorial duties, I could not write stories for several weeks. So I don’t expect to offend anyone with my stories.

However, if my old stories offended my followers for reasons beyond my understanding, I apologize sincerely. We are human beings and might make mistakes.

However, I firmly believe that my stories are not offensive to anyone as I don’t write about controversial topics. I specialize in media and design. Most of my stories are related to social media, particularly YouTube. One of my goals is to introduce Medium writers on YouTube.

Over a month ago, Dr Mehmet Yildiz, chief editor of Illumination Integrated Publications, requested my help to Illumination as the number of writers and their stories significantly increased.

In addition, some editors of the publication became unwell and causing the accumulation of a massive backlog for the editors.

Since Dr. Yildiz mentored me to become a better blogger and writer, I accepted his request and volunteered to help.

Therefore, I focussed on reviewing and publishing around 50 stories from the publication queue. Unfortunately, these editorial and publishing duties consumed all my available time. Thus I had no chance to write stories.

That is fine by me as my goal is to help other writers learn from their knowledge rather than earning income from writing. I have a full-time job that pays my bills.

I review stories and share them on social media to create visibility. I did not leave any negative comments to any writer.

Therefore, I am curious and a bit worried about why all my followers unfollowed me.

The only activity in June 2022 was to create a new publication called Illumination Gaming, as encouraged by Dr. Yildiz. I aim to bring gamers to one place and create a collaborative atmosphere.

In June 2022, I only wrote a single story attached.

I also own the Illumination on YouTube publication.

Final Words

I hope writing about gaming or YouTube is not offensive to my readers on Medium.

Thinking this might be a system error on Medium, I checked the editors’ profiles and asked some of them.

Editors confirmed that their followers look okay with no noticeable change.

I still believe that this is a system error, but I wonder why the system specifically chose my account.
