Summary

Splitgate is a unique FPS game that differentiates itself with portal mechanics and offers a variety of game modes, providing a fresh experience for players seeking an alternative to traditional FPS games.

Abstract

Splitgate, developed by 1047 games, is a relatively new entry in the FPS genre that gained significant attention on social media platforms in mid-2021. Its defining feature is the incorporation of portals into the gameplay, allowing players to create strategic paths and add a new dimension to combat and movement. The game, which was initially released in 2019, faced server issues due to its unexpected popularity but has since resolved them. Splitgate offers several game modes, including familiar ones with unique twists, such as Contamination, where players either become zombies or survivors, and Oddball, where holding a ball scores points for the team. The author, who is also a writer and editor for gaming publications on Medium, highly recommends Splitgate for those looking for a fun and different FPS experience.

Splitgate: An Interesting Take on the FPS Gaming Genre

This can be an entertaining game to play if you’re bored of generic First Person Shooter games.

Purpose of the Story

In this article, my goal is to briefly introduce Splitgate to new players based on my experience.

What is Splitgate?

Splitgate is a fairly new FPS (First Person Shooter) game developed by 1047 games. It was initially released in 2019 as an early access game. But it blew up on social media platforms such as TikTok in mid-2021.

The game was still in its early access phase at the time. Therefore the developers didn’t need to allocate too many servers for it since they assumed the player base wouldn’t be so extensive.

Little did they know that the servers quickly became overloaded overnight due to so many people sharing the game on social media platforms.

They had no choice but to implement a queue system so that the servers wouldn’t overload and crash until they could expand their capacity.

Eventually, though, they caught up to the demand and currently no longer require a queue system. Now you might be asking what makes Splitgate different from other FPS games.

Why Splitgate is different from other FPS games?

Well, the answer is the unique addition they introduced in the main gameplay. Splitgate can be described as an FPS PvP (Player vs. Player) game, similar to Halo and Call of Duty.

But the unique attribute is the addition of portals.

In the Splitgate maps, there are multiple special surfaces players can open portals in order to create unique paths around the maps.

You can simply place one portal on a surface near you and another portal on the other side of the map and instantly travel between them.

As you can imagine, this unique mechanic adds a whole new side to the game. I found it so amusing to portal behind someone shooting me and surprise them from behind.

It also made escaping death a lot more interesting. Aside from the Splitgates portal system, it also introduced many familiar game modes with subtle but interesting difference such as Contamination.

Zombies and Survivors

In this game mode, there are two teams, zombies and survivors.

Zombies have a bat called the BFB which can insta-kill, while survivors have a shotgun and a carbine with limited ammo.

Zombies have the ability to access the portal while survivors don’t.

Many players treat this game mode as hiding and seek. I have had a lot of fun playing this game mode with my group of friends.

Splitgate Modes

Oddball

There is also an exciting game mode called Oddball. In this game mode, players compete to hold the Oddball for as long as possible to accumulate points for their team.

While holding the ball, you cannot use your weapons. So you have to rely on escaping through portals or rely on your teammates to protect you.

You can also use the ball as a melee weapon if you get cornered.

Team SWAT

My favorite game mode is called Team SWAT. This game mode essentially has the same rules as team deathmatch.

But the only difference is headshots are insta-kills.

I have spent a majority of my time on split gate either playing Team Swat alone or playing private matches with my friend group.

Final Words

Splitgate is a very fun game to play and just mess around with friends.

I believe Splitgate is a very interesting take on the FPS genre.

Not only does it introduce portals to the gameplay, but it also introduces a fun new take on familiar game modes.

It can be an entertaining game to play if you’re bored of generic FPS games that have been around for years.

If you enjoy FPS games, then why not give Splitgate a try.
