Synopsis

  • Medium has made it extremely difficult for a new reader to see your entire portfolio. I’ve listed here all 113 of my stories here by category, title and subtitle with links.
  • Category links take you to another, easier-to-navigate short TOC with stories for that category only.
  • A Medium website bug on Nov 13, 2020 does not add new stories to your profile if you have too many pinned. They say to unpin all stories, but based on experiment, I believe the limit is 5 pinned stories.

How the TOC works

The most significant stories in each category will include a short synopsis, not the full screen with picture as shown in Medium’s profile. You can easily scan through the entire list and pick stories of interest.

Medium - Publishing Hints & Help

  • Medium’s recent Portfolio changes have wreaked havoc in many areas. Some caused pieces to stop working (linked article at the end). However, You can rearrange your profile display order.
  • The “Pin” and one-screen display as new readers scroll your profile can be an improvement — if you add a synopsis at the top of your stories. That’s a lot of extra work, but may be worth it. My article provides a step-by-step procedure on how to do both, plus how to build a Table-of-Contents. (Medium category)

  • Write your values down. If you can’t, are you sure you know what they are? They may just be fuzzy thoughts floating in the air. You hope to always live by your values.   • My poor managers learned about cats. I built an app without their knowledge — I let them know after it was installed. I committed their department to a specific date. I was even fired for precisely following procedures.
  • They had to put up with me because everybody else was ecstatic with my temperament and work. I intentionally avoided being a manager. I wouldn’t be able to behave like a cat and have fun at work.   • Someone said, “Antiabortionists are so worried about the fetus, but don’t care about the baby after it is born.” The Supreme Court made one big mistake with Roe-v-Wade when addressing the first half of that statement. They inserted a fuzzy middle between two solid decisions — room for constant bickering. I’ll address that. Also, the Court, Congress, religions, nobody, seriously mentions the other half of the abortion problem. This article identifies both parts and proposes a workable solution. Women’s Issues

  • What would happen if women in the U.S. didn’t change their name? Now, it’s a huge burden to change her business cards, passport, driver’s license, credit cards, bank accounts, health record, etc. Other countries don’t. This article examines some of those customs and some strange complications here in the States.
  • How abortion, slavery, gun control, church taxation, and the Bible relate to each other.

Romance

  • The Danube looks blue only through the eyes of one standing next to their own true love. Compared to an ocean cruise ship, huge, impressive, like a skyscraper on its side, the sleek Viking river cruise ship rests quietly on the water. With 185 passengers instead of 7 thousand, it is uncrowded, peaceful — a feel-good story of dining, dancing, and tranquility.

Philosophy

  • Not just race and sex. Unfounded biases are really patterns of thinking. You may not even be aware of those within yourself. This article examines a wide range of prejudices and where they came from.
  • Age questions are always dangerous, even when required as part of the job. Young people seem to think retired people sit all day in their rocking chairs. The poor desk clerk at the museum in Budapest, Hungary learned differently. Her look of shock was priceless.

Retirement — The Villages

  • Live dancing music on the Square every night drove the decision to retire to The Villages. It made them unique from the dozens of other places we visited. The lively bands draw over 100 dancers for every song, pre-virus. The music is mostly rock, with some country, soul and other music mixed in. The 3 squares have reopened with a limited number of spectators and dancers.
  • There is actually something else to do during retirement in The Villages, other than golf and the 3,000 clubs. Some of the 30 or 40 bands are pictured here. However, we dance about two hours every day.
  • I felt someone grab my butt!
  • NOTE: This article is a complete rewrite one year later of “Picking Fresh, Tasty Berries in the Spring” and stands on its own merits. It came from a writer’s challenge posed in a story by Matt Lillywhite. It is the After of a Before/After and, unlisted, not set up for payment.

Project Management

  • I have never had a project that I was personally in charge of fail from 1969 to present. The average failure rate for new projects is 14% according to CIO magazine. Here are 3 IT examples plus one other reason that occurs everywhere.
  • Nothing goes perfectly. A recent upgrade of Medium.com demonstrated that. You must be ready when things don’t go as expected. Even more important, you must prepare your customers for such events. This article shows how to prepare customers and your management. You want to appear proactive, not reactive.

Leadership

  • Everybody benefits from good training — the trainee, the instructor, the company, and the company’s customers. To be effective, the trainer must put people into real-world situations, but not so large that they are overwhelming.
  • Made-up problems do not work well. This article shows how to do that from McDonald’s to computer programmers to managers.

Politics & Government

  • How do you fight the giant going back on its agreements, threatening to devalue your homes, endangering your physical wellbeing, and asking the county to help with a blank check?
  • Most people never do this, but if the local government is about to do something detrimental to your neighborhood or an agency has misbehaved, you may need to. Here are some tips.

Finance

  • Usually, management tries to maximize profits, the golden eggs. However, it will eventually become counterproductive to squeeze out every last cent. That can irritate your goose.
  • Maintenance is important. Hurricanes subject trees to 100 mph winds. Weak or dead limbs can become projectiles.
  • A thick, heavy canopy won’t let the wind go through and may topple the entire tree onto your house or send extremely large limbs flying.

Travel

COVID

  • Lack of leadership qualities
  • We’re all in this coronavirus thing together. There is no cure at this point. It’s highly contagious. The only things that keep it from spreading are masks and isolation. The masks are not foolproof, but they ARE better than nothing.

Medical

  • Insurance companies encourage patients to buy a 90-day supply of medications by having the patient make two monthly co-pays at once instead of three.
  • That works ok until they change the rules. Then, they endanger patients.
  • I finally bought one after much badgering by my dentist and dental hygienist. My teeth feel like they were cleaned by the hygienist yesterday even a month later. I don’t know how I ever got along without it, after I learned how to operate it!
  • Sometime in your life, you will need to know about diabetes. My wife and I, coworkers, neighbors and strangers have had to contend with everything here. This article covers everything you need to know. It’s already changed the life for two early reviewers.
