The creator of the publication Illumination, Dr Mehmetyildiz, asked for a writer’s profile. I had a published interview which he could use to start, but it was fairly general with just a couple of sections devoted to writing. A writer’s profile is something entirely different.

Nothing is ever as simple as it seems

Everything represents me as a writer — every article, comment, Facebook post, twitter post, and text message. I try to make every one as excellent as possible, complete with meaningful titles and starting sentences.

Every writer has a style, whether they realize it or not. Mine revolves around these concepts:

  • My resume said, “I solve problems.”
  • My brother once said, “Oh, No. You asked him a question!”

Questions come from everywhere, like the TV ad where the kid asks, “What does the dishwasher do?” That article is in my stories folder waiting to be written (Published Sept 10, 2020).

Every news story, every romance novel, all observations while traveling, etc. — every interaction with the world generates questions in my mind.

My wife worked in medical research and I designed and developed computer systems. Both highly analytical jobs. We analyze everything. But an analysis is most valuable if it generates some results.

Most of my articles are analytical. They end in either with a proposed solution, or something for the reader to think about. My article chastising Trump’s press conferences ends with suggestions on how to fix them.

I don’t know if he can do it.

However, not all stories are analytical, or should I say coldly analytical. At times, the Bugs Bunny and/or the Romantic side gets added to the mix. I hope those stories inspire the reader to feel better about themselves or their situation, maybe give them hope.

Sometimes, there is no real point except to make the reader smile. My favorite band leader in The Villages from the band, Groove41, is considering my song lyrics for next winter.

I published my first article long before the internet was available to the public. That article, “Computer Programming and Systems Analysis in the Rapidly Changing VideoDisc Environment” (RCA Engineer magazine, July 1982), sold over 10,000 reprints world-wide.

When I gave my final draft to my boss for his approval before submission, he pulled out TWO red pens and demonstrated to me how important it is to have a proofreader!

Most popular and most disappointing view count

I never dreamed that this story would have much impact. It was curated and has been the top earner every month since it appeared!

It’s simple, contains a comparison between a restaurant steak dinner and the same dinner at home, includes relapses and how to overcome them, and shows the average person how to do the same thing, without buying into a special diet. It explains why people regain weight and how to avoid that fate.

This other story could save lives! Its target audience is everyone who does not have diabetes. As my first story on Medium, I made too many mistakes and it had no chance of being curated.

I plan to rewrite it later this year, splitting it into three sections with smaller, overlapping target audiences, instead of covering everything and targeting the entire world.

Once, my boss said, “If someone asked you for a drink, you would use a firehose.” I have to work very hard not to get carried away with my Medium articles.

Finally, this article describes me perfectly.

I belong to a writers club in The Villages, 25 book authors and me. When I read this story to them, one was not familiar with the traits if a cat. I added those.

Nice thing about Medium, you can go back and correct stories, although the publication date does not change and the story is not highlighted to your followers. It is fixed for new readers.
