October’s Best — Editor’s Choice: Elizabeth Gilbert’s Advice on Perfectionism

Let’s have a look at our best stories this month

Image by Free-Photos and Thought Catalog from Pixabay

Elizabeth Gilbert says we must call perfectionism by its real name: fear. It’s your fear of not being good enough.

Since I have recently seen the movie Dune, I know fear is the mind-killer. It numbs your mind.

“We must understand the need for perfectionism is a corrosive waste of time, because nothing is ever beyond criticism. No matter how many hours you spend to render something flawless, somebody will always be able to find fault with it,” Elizabeth Gilbert says in her book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear.

Even the perfect things are not likable because they lack the touch of humanness. Becuase to be human means to be flawed. Your pursuit of perfection slows you down — or stops you completely — from hounding after your stories.

“At some point, you really just have to finish your work and release it as is-if only so you can go on and make other things with a glad and determined heart,” she says.

Your work is not you. It’s only one of the things you’ll do in your life.

“Nothing is less efficient than perfectionism,” she says. Finish your work to the best of your liking — the way you feel it should. Don’t seek anybody’s approval, don’t let false ideals kill your story.

While you are trying to reach perfection, other writers are making big money with their imperfect work.

“I tell any woman I meet — don’t hold back your ideas until they’re perfect. Because first of all perfect doesn’t exist and second, you’ll be overrun by people who are throwing out stuff that’s half formed when yours is 95% formed — 95% is good enough. Done is better than good,” Elizabeth says. Hit the publish button. Let your work be out there.

On the other hand, perfectionism never makes you perfect. If you don’t feel happy or satisfied, you’ll quit writing after a week or a month. Your pursuit of perfection will only disappoint you.

Perfectionism rarely begets perfection, or satisfaction — only disappointment. ~ Ryan Holiday

According to Elizabeth, “Perfectionism stops people from completing their works, yes — but even worse, it often stops people from beginning their work. Perfectionists often decide in advance that the end product is never going to be satisfactory, so they don’t even bother trying to be creative in the first place.”

Overcome your fear. Write about what is disturbing you — write about your fears and perfectionism. Just get this out of your system — fear is a mind-killer and you need to write about it to help yourself and many others.

Most of us think we are procrastinating because we are trying to find our perfect mood, place, or weather, but actually, we are only terrified.

Elizabeth says, “I think perfectionism is just a high-end, haute couture version of fear. I think perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mink coat, pretending to be elegant when actually we’re just terrified. Because underneath that shiny veneer, perfectionism is nothing more than deep existential angst that says, again and again, “I am not good enough and I will never be good enough.””

If you want to be a writer, know your fears and your flaws. Accept your mistakes. Let your imperfections define you. When people will love your work, they’ll also learn to love your flaws.

These top writers are ready to face their fear. Here is the list of top stories for October 21:

90. What’s my type? Immigrants.

Dagmara Cintron. NYC Native residing in Los Angeles. FIT graduate. Writer and avid tiktoker.

She is a fine writer. Her writing style is easy to follow, flowing, and engaging. Don’t forget to check her other work.

“I don’t think I could date someone that’s not from an immigrant family,” my friend said to me the other day.

There are all sorts of qualities people check off their list when looking for an ideal partner: tall, long hair, no hair, educated, must be obsessed with The Office. But for my friend, not being from an immigrant family might be a big red flag.

89. Dark winters of Netherlands from the eyes of an ex-pat

Yamini Hundare. When you are standing on a cliff, jump to fly not to fall… I am an aspiring writer who loves to write about agile mindset, my own experiences, and kids' stories.

She is a fine writer. Her writing style is easy to follow, flowing, and engaging. Don’t forget to check her other work.

Winters can be very awful, and you can see more cases of mental illness surfacing. We are deprived of the bright sunshine, and this can take a toll on people’s mental health. Be cautious and make sure you make extra efforts to step out and mingle with people. Don’t let the mood take control of your mind. If there is the slightest sunshine, go for a walk and let your skin have that bright light.

Nearly everyone on my mother’s side having heart attacks, my mom having a stroke my sophomore year of high school, my father being an alcoholic, family members moving across the country to be with someone they’ve barely known. Neither of my parents graduated college. I’ve had to work hard for most of what I have.

Influential from the outside yet gentle from within.

86. 11 Behavioral Milestones On The Path To A Successful Life

John Emmanuel. Fanatic amateur writer || Dreamer || Ayodeji Awosika jr. 🙂 || Football Lover.

83. Why do 95% of Startups Fail?

Hammad Hassan. An Entrepreneur | Live, Write, Capture and Enjoy!

He is a fine writer. His writing style is simple and engaging. Do check his other work.

When startups fail, it’s usually not because they run out of money. It’s because they didn’t solve a problem that customers want to be solved.

There are three problems with most early-stage startups:

They don’t know what their customers really need, they can’t do anything about it, and no one really cares anyway.

Most startups fail because the founders don’t pay attention to this simple formula.

She is a fine writer. Her writing style is easy to follow, flowing, and engaging. Don’t forget to check her other work.

After what feels like an eternity of dumps and side ways action, Bitcoin is now engaging her rocket boosters. Yesterday (01/10/21) BTC managed an insane rally. In less than five minutes, the price increased by $2000. The rally didn’t stop there either. Bitcoin has continued to make significant gains throughout the day. I have always heard people talking about luck as some mysterious event that has to be in your favor to supplement your hard work if you want to be successful. I will call bullsh*t on that and here is my reason.

There is however one trait that is not a random serendipitous event that cannot be measured or controlled in our daily lives which is the case when it comes to luck.

79. Am I Jealous of White People?

MJ Adia. Black-Filipina. Lived in Peru for 5 years. LICSW, dancer, meditator. Writes about multiculturalism, cinema, race, social issues.

She is a fine writer. Her writing style is easy to follow, moving, and engaging. Don’t forget to check her other work.

I took my boyfriend to a fancy lunch in the countryside of Lima for his birthday. We sat facing a fire pit, in a grassy, countryside eco-restaurant with plenty of tourists. As we waited for our food, we saw a white woman with her Peruvian husband. She had laid a blanket on the grass. She then started changing the baby’s diaper. Right there. Going home to visit my Dutch relatives, I met up with old friends and, assuming we were all vaccinated, I went in for a hug when they stepped back; no jabs. Naively, I blamed it on logistics. ‘Perhaps the vaccination rate here is pretty low’ went through my mind. Or maybe they had put it off? But no and no, it turns out my friends believe the government’s covid measures are akin to Nazis demanding Jewish people wear a yellow star or medical apartheid if you will. Yeah, right.

The man made a neat and friendly impression when he viewed Brian’s extra room, seemed reliable and respectful, and just happened to turn out a fugitive diamond thief. A young woman in a wedding dress is a mystical trigger. She is not only herself but an embodiment of dreams and aspirations that extend beyond her immediate union with her beloved. What’s inevitability thinking? It’s the solid and rigid belief that something will happen in the future. It’s a prediction with no conditions attached to it.

A clear example of inevitability thinking was the peak oil theory. In the late seventies, people used to warn that the world would run out of fossil fuels soon. The worst I have ever felt about myself as a human being was in relation to my role as mother to my three kids. That’s the god-honest truth of it.

Technology is changing our economy and finances at an alarming rate. As a technology writer, one of the most frequent requests from my loyal readers is to write articles about technologies that might give them some information on future investment. This inspired me to write this article.

I can make technological and scientific predictions based on research and prior experience. Therefore, I invest in technology stocks based on my decades of experience focusing on emerging technologies such as AI, robotics, IoT, big data, cloud computing, cybersecurity, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and quantum computing. However, I am not an economist or a financial advisor. Therefore, I cannot give financial advice. Nevertheless, I provide a balanced view by opening a window to the tech world for you.
