Should You Drink Coffee before or after Breakfast? A Recent Study Has the Answer
“This study is important and has far-reaching health implications.”
The time of day we drink our coffee is crucial.
This is something I have written about before, which resonated with a lot of people. Coffee is good for you. However, it’s not so good all the time.
And a recent study has revealed whether we should have coffee before breakfast or after.
The Research
A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition has revealed the detrimental impact of consuming coffee before breakfast, especially when our sleep quality has been poor.
The study revealed that even after a single night of poor sleep, consuming coffee can increase our blood glucose response to a meal by 50%.
The researchers explain,
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee — intuitively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee. This study is important and has far-reaching health implications as up until now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control.”
This is a really important finding, as I think most of us have poor nights of sleep more often than we’d like. The “poor sleep quality” in the study was waking up every hour for 5 minutes each time. Being a light sleeper, this is pretty much a standard night for me. This means that even if you didn’t consider your night to be particularly “poor”, coffee might still have a big impact on your blood glucose in the morning.
What You Can Do
As hard as it may be, have breakfast before having your coffee. Or, at least have a light snack. Especially if you’ve had a particularly bad night.
You can have your coffee after, (but still, be careful with your caffeine if you haven’t slept well), but it’s really important to wait.
Furthermore, research shows we should be waiting at least one hour after waking and ideally 90 minutes after waking before having coffee anyway. This gives you ample time to consume some calories.
