The purpose of this story is to share with you an interview that I conducted with Gurpreet Dhariwal.

I have been reading insightful stories and poems of Gurpreet since we started ILLUMINATION. It was a privilege for me to have Gurpreet as a well-known writer and a published poet.

Gurpreet is an author of “My Soul Rants: Poems of a Born Spectator”. Her eBook is now available at Google PlayStore, and Amazon Kindle. I found out that she was fond of sketching and painting. It was impressive to see her published work in various anthologies and poetry books such as A Breath of Verses, The Mirage, Crossroads, The Stage, e-Fiction India, and Constellation of Bleeding Inks.

Gurpreet’s stories and poetry inspire our readers. She is a reputable writer on ILLUMINATION and other publications engaging meaningfully with our writers and supporting their content on Medium. Let’s explore the background of this successful writer and poet!

Tell us a bit about your background, Gurpreet.

I belong to India. I was born and brought up in Delhi.

As far as my professional background is concerned, I have worked in different streams of work for eight years. To name a few: Business development, content marketing, online marketing, process assistant, executive assistant and migrations manager too.

Family wise, I am the youngest among the three siblings and I am living with my parents.

Why do you write on Medium?

When I was introduced to Medium, I have had no clue that I would stick to this website longer than expected. I was a blogger in 2004 and two years I wrote more than 100 blogs there. When I came to know about medium, I thought in my mind why shouldn’t I go ahead and give it a try? I have been writing for more than 18 years so medium is like being at the right place at the right time.

What are your values as a writer?

I have been a fearless writer since the day I have joined medium or may be before that. My values are integrity and being honest with myself and my emotions. Whatever I am writing, people find it raw because as per me raw is rare and real. I share whatever I observe be it personally or in others and words give me power to share my feelings with the world.

What are the top three books affected your life?

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

What are your hobbies?

I love writing, reading, working out, watching movies, cooking, sketching, painting and dancing.

How do you connect with your readers?

I have been meeting a lot of creative and enthusiastic writers here on Medium and other social media platforms too. I love to hear great things from the strangers about my work and sometimes they connect with me recalling how they felt when I read their particular article. It gives me a sense of belonging and makes me more generous in life.

Why did you join ILLUMINATION and how do you find it so far?

When I joined Medium in Jan 2020, I wasn’t expecting any publication to approach on its own that too in such a short period. I got added by few publications and when asked to be a part of ILLUMINATION, I knew I would love to a part of it because it was becoming one stop shop for all the life experiences and learning. I am grateful to be a part of it where I haven’t been judged since genesis and it has given me a great readership circle so far.

Who are the top ten writers you follow on ILLUMINATION?

I would say picking up ten writers here would be a tough task as I have been a fan of every person I have been reading here and picking the learning from their articles to implement in my life.

What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience and why?

I am strictly against poverty in the world. I would repeat I am against the poverty but not against the poorest souls. I penned down this letter to let the world know how unfair we are towards beggars on the street and what all we can learn from them to be more compassionate and kindhearted in life.

I am someone who goes through depression and anxiety a lot. I can vouch for one thing that I remain in depression 300 days throughout the year and 65 days are for experiencing other emotions as a state of happiness. I wrote this letter to my bitchy friend depression to let it know that I have not been giving on myself not today or ever.

I wanted to write a sad fictional story so I came up with this one. The idea was to let the world know how to be more available to others and not being lost in their world. Every person we meet and greet has a story to tell and we should lend our ears and hands to those who need it. If we do so, this world would become an amazing place for everyone to live and let live.

I was seeking motivation and inspiration within the self so I wrote 20 things I wanted to remind myself because my mind was getting off the track. After writing my heart-out, I realized how convenient it was for me to tell my mind that everything is fine and we shall overcome everything that comes my way. Giving up is surely not in my DNA.

I wrote this poem because I got bullied in one of the medium groups on Facebook as that lady didn’t like my way of reading her article. The reason being I highlighted the majority of her article and she said it doesn’t help. But to tell you the truth, I wasn’t helping her out that’s the way how I read in real life and in the virtual world too. I had to block her as I couldn’t be a part of her negativity.

What are the success factors for you as a writer on Medium?

Well! To be very honest, I never joined Medium to be a successful writer. I believe the day we write our first word is the day we become a writer. Whether we become a success or failure depends on how do we perceive ourselves in our own eyes. I would always be a successful person for myself as I learned how to let go of my failures and learn from my setbacks without taking any help from the outside world. I will always be a winner in my life.

What do you recommend to the new writers on ILLUMINATION?

I would say if writing is your passion then please pursue it to the end of this world. Write when you breathe, write when you dance, write when you dream, just keep on writing my friends.

What are your future plans as a writer?

I am working on three prose books and one novel at present. The idea is to compile prose books and get them in the market in the next six months. My novel may take time but I have been coming back to it after a long writing break.
