Purpose of the Story

In this story, I share with you an interview that I conducted with Marianna Saver. I have been following and reading inspiring stories of Marianna since my early days on Medium.

It was a serendipitous encounter to come across insightful content from Marianna. I am pleased Marianna accepted my invitation to join ILLUMINATION and started illuminating our publication.

Let’s explore!

Tell us a bit about your background, Marianna.

I was born in Florence, Italy, and moved to London in my earliest twenties, about 6 years ago. The hectic way of life here doesn’t really match my quiet personality, but I love the cultural richness London has to offer. And from where I live the only thing you can see are trees and green all around, which I consider a blessing.

Writing for me started as a way to cope with life and the emotional overloads I experienced during my childhood, being diagnosed with hypersensitivity — and it’s now a far greater passion.

Why do you write on Medium?

The reason why I write on Medium is the reason why I write: because I need to. I have been writing since I remember to exists. I think the first thing I wrote just for the sake of it was a poem. I wrote it one night on writing paper for kids because my mum wouldn’t let me in her bed. I was six years old. Since then, I have never stopped.

What are your values as a writer?

I strive to be authentic and to simplify what seems complicated. The world is far from simple but I believe that a good life is about learning to find simplicity in the complexity of things, to see light in the darkness, and to experience stillness amid the chaos.

It’s the way you think, rather than what you immediately see or know that makes a difference. I try to convey that with every piece I write.

What are the top three books affected your life?

It’s hard to choose only three but if I have to, they must be The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, Charlotte by David Foenkinos, and Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre.

What are your hobbies?

Painting, writing and cooking.

How do you connect with your readers?

With my writing, I hope. And also through my weekly newsletter, my Instagram account @themorningair, and my blog themorningair.com

Why did you join ILLUMINATION and how do you find it so far?

I received an invitation by Dr Mehmet Yildiz and, after seeing the quality of the stories being published here, I decided to send my application.

What I like the most about the publication, besides its name — which is a magnet for a nerd like me — is the sense of community you feel, both as a writer and as a reader.

I enjoy the digests and updates from Dr. Yildiz, as they offer an extensive compendium of inspiring stories and authors, all in one place.

Who are the top ten writers you follow on ILLUMINATION?

I enjoy reading stories from Jake Daghe, Rafael Eliassen, Christina Hoag, John Cousins, Paul Myers MBA, Noah Levy, Kayo Zaduban, Bill Abbate, Anu Anniah, Darrin Atkins.

What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience, and why?

These are all pieces that come from personal experience and tap into research too. Above all, they are exactly what I needed to remember or hear at the time I wrote them. Maybe it’s what someone else needs to hear too.

I share them here in the hope that they’ll spark new thoughts or questions, or just offer some comfort.

What are the success factors for you as a writer on Medium?

I consider a piece a success if it resonates with someone and if it leaves them richer than they were before.

What do you recommend to the new writers on ILLUMINATION?

To have fun and keep writing. To connect with other writers and with their readers, both on here and outside of the platform.

What are your future plans as a writer?

A book is in the plans. But really, what’s important for me as a writer is to keep writing — both on here and on my blog — to help myself and others think better and live simpler.

And if a line of mine ever inspires a thought or a move in the right direction, even in just one person, I’ve done my part.
