Interview with Ann K Frailey

Purpose of the Story

In this story, I want to share an interview that I conducted with Ann K Frailey. I met Ann before ILLUMINATION started.

We are connected at Goodreads as I am closely following several fiction books in various genres authored by Ann. We host several fiction chapters from Ann on ILLUMINATION.

It is a privilege and pleasure to host Ann’s creative stories. Despite her busy schedule as a published author, I am grateful that Ann accepted my offer to participate in this interview.

Let’s explore!

Tell us a bit about your background, Ann.

I was raised in Milwaukee, WI, and earned a degree in Elementary Education. I taught in public and private schools, served in the Peace Corps, later got married, and moved to Illinois. My husband and I were blessed with eight kids before he died from cancer. My kids and I live in rural Illinois, enjoying the natural beauty here and learning something new each day from God’s created world.

Why do you write on Medium?

Writing is easy in comparison to managing social media. When I discovered Medium, I found a safe and friendly environment to share my work, encourage others, and become part of a larger writing community. This experience has been a blessing on a lot of levels.

What are your values as a writer?

My values don’t change depending on my role as writer, mother, or friend. I value my relationship with God as my creator and the creator of our universe, which leads me to a deep appreciation for everyone and everything He has made. I write to share my life journey as honestly as possible through fiction and non-fiction. I value authenticity and honest humility very much.

What are the top three books affected your life?

I read so much that I can’t say which books have had the most impact. I would suggest that my current reading list helps to inform me every new day. I recently read a biography of Alexander Hamilton and then a fictional account of the life of his wife, Eliza, and those two books have effected how I see the current political scene. If the US could survive the Revolutionary War, hot button issues like slavery, and personality conflicts between the founding fathers, we will survive our current crisis. I have more faith in our world than ever before.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy conversations with my kids, playing with our dogs and cats, reading good books, writing stories, and spending time with nature.

How do you connect with your readers?

I connect with readers mostly through comments they leave and through commenting on other writer’s posts. It is a great way to really get to know each other in our cyber-world.

Why did you join ILLUMINATION and how do you find it so far?

I joined Illumination because Dr Mehmet Yildiz invited me, and I have enjoyed reading the posts of other writers on this site. I find the mutual support to be refreshing and life giving. I only wish I had more time in the day to read and comment more.

Who are the top ten writers you follow on ILLUMINATION?

I hate to pick ten. I read new writers every time I get on and review new posts. I don’t have a top ten anymore than I have a favorite child.

What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience and why?

Again, I hate to pick certain posts because each story and reflection is unique and hits readers differently. I have been amazed by positive comments on stories I thought no one would like and been sad to see no reaction to posts I thought were winners. There is a certain amount of grace and serendipity to what readers discover in my work. I leave that in God‘s hands.

What are the success factors for you as a writer on Medium?

It has been a hills and valleys journey. I love the fact that so many kind writers take the time to read and comment on my work. I enjoy getting to know fellow authors, and I’m sure I have improved my writing in the awareness that there are generous souls open to my work.

What do you recommend to the new writers on ILLUMINATION?

Write what inspires you in all honesty. Some people say write for the audience. But it is hard to know who your audience might be on a given day. I write heart-to-heart — human-to-human. That gives me the strength to keep on writing.

What are your future plans as a writer?

I write a short story alternating with a HeartBeats reflection post each Friday, and I continue to write novels and publish them through Amazon. I hope to become a better writer…and more importantly…a better human being before I die.
