In this story, I want to share with you an interview that I conducted with Dr John Frederick Rose. John is a new writer on ILLUMINATION, but in the last couple of weeks, he has submitted several stories coming from his authentic and creative pen.

More importantly, John has started participating and collaborating on our Slack channel and has already made several good friends. We enjoyed John’s creative and engaging content.

Let’s explore his interesting life!

Tell us a bit about your background, John.

I graduated from Sydney University in 1974 and started work as a Mining engineer, spending two years in England with GEC. England was wonderful: I binged on Theatre and Opera; traveled in the EU; and spent most of my savings. I started my own business manufacturing microcomputers in 1978 and moved to software consulting that continued for 30 or so years. Then my Ph.D. I found writing a way of developing and sharing ideas. I found a home in Illumination. I started to write poetry and here I am.

Why do you write on Medium?

When I joined Medium it was like going out into a huge garden of beauty, aromas and surreal excitement. Medium was overwhelming, I read all the instructions and felt a bit intimidated by the new found freedom to express myself. I discovered the publication Illumination and received the support and encouragement I needed to write and develop.

What are your values as a writer?

I have always wanted to help people develop their ideas and apply critical thinking. As a writer, I must develop the most effective way I can to communicate and for me this is my poetry. Complex concepts simply discussed and expressed in poetry. To express my values, so people understand where I’m coming from I can use the emotions of poetry.

What are the top three books affected your life?

The Memory Code by Lynne Kelly. Introduced me to Songlines and Memory Palaces.

Living Systems by Miller — It was my first introduction to the complexity and connectedness of life.

The Theory of Gaia first proposed by James Lovelock and developed in a series of books and publications.

What are your hobbies?

Reading, thinking and tinkering. I garden and walk. I think about connectedness. I like to build models of systems, such as my aquaponics system in which I have fish and grow basil. Cooking because I want to be in control of my health. Reading because I seek Inspiration. Writing because it exercises my mind. Exercise as it connects my mind and body.

How do you connect with your readers?

On medium, it means actively following them to see what they are reading and writing. Engage with them and give a response. Showing I care about what they think, their opinions count.

Why did you join ILLUMINATION and how do you find it so far?

Initially I joined Illumination out of sheer curiosity. Then I saw the way writers, readers and editors interact and support each other. A true collaboration. Honestly, I felt like I was at home. I get my cup of coffee and talk to my friends. Listen, think and talk. It’s wonderful.

Who are the top ten writers you follow on ILLUMINATION?

So many wonderful writers of many rich backgrounds. People who I would normally never meet. Each time I meet a writer’s story is an adventure. I’ve enjoyed these writer’s works: Kevin Buddaeus, Holly Jahangiri, Tree Langdon ♾️, Corrine Roberts, Trista Ainsworth, Dipti Pande, Pavane Ravel, Naomi Knight, Gurpreet Dhariwal, René Junge, Chris Hedges

What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience and why?

I found I kept on going back and building on these stories:

Gaia and I My first story, my place in the greater world, my beliefs and values. I believe to share my writing people need to understand my context in life.

Songlines and Kookaburras I think of Songlines as describing the way my ideas connect not only with me, but in my society. I firmly believe thinking about Songlines will help people find their place and connection with their land and culture.

Songlines of Gaia, the Living Earth

My writing is foundered on technical issues, it was academic and lacked emotion. This story was describing songlines in poetry and I loved writing it. This is my story for introducing people to our connectedness with the living Earth.

It’s The Little Things That Count This story shows we as individuals DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE when we try to cut down on consumption. We can work together to combat climate change.

Not Quite a Chariot Sometimes it is hard to adapt. I wrote this to show that we can change despite other people’s opinions.

What are the success factors for you as a writer on Medium?

Adapting to my reader, being willing to try new ways of communicating in my use of poetry. Being frank, honest and forthright in my opinions, values and beliefs.

What do you recommend to the new writers on ILLUMINATION?

Put aside your assumptions, expectations and opinions. Seek out and read other writers’ articles. Tell them your thoughts, understand their responses and above all, experiment with your writing. Most important, write often, publish often.

What are your feature plans as a writer?

My intention is to build an anthology of poetry that explores Gaia on an emotional and human level. To instill, by example, love of our living Earth. Doing this, I hope will encourage people to band together and make things better.

I try and use simple everyday things in poetry to explain deep truths. I take all my own pictures, as people relate to the personal. I promote simple ways of thinking for this is a path to understanding.

Thank you for your valuable time, John. I look forward to reading more stories from your creative pen. Your contribution to our publication is greatly appreciated by our writers and readers. You are an inspirational writer on ILLUMINATION. We enjoy your authentic content.
