How writers and bloggers can use social media platforms meaningfully and productively with minimal effort

Introduction

I see social media as a serendipity machine for writers and readers. Sharing content on social media can be beneficial for freelance writers. The bigger and more engaging your network, the better visibility you can gain via social media. However, you must think and act smart to get the best out of this serendipity tool.

Social media can bring tangible and intangible benefits in the long term. For example, the innovative use of social media has recently helped me sell 1,000 books in a month. Entrepreneurial thinking, digital intelligence, and digital marketing are essential skills for freelance writers.

By promoting your content, you can gain new followers. Engaging with them meaningfully and with a disciplined approach, you can build your subscribers and gain regular readers. Let’s keep in mind that subscribers can produce 50 times better results than followers for freelance writers.

Contrary to common perceptions, sharing content on these sites takes little time. Approximately ten minutes of daily investment suffices. My previous estimate was six minutes. I allocate 30 minutes daily as I also share the content of other writers and bloggers whom I follow. This investment not only helps my favorite content developers but also creates serendipity for my content.

Social media also has a dark side. It relates to the dopamine system, as mentioned in this story titled Awareness of Punishment Pathways in the Brain for Mental Health. Too much dopamine and addictive behavior have adverse health effects.

As I pointed out in a post titled Social Media Fast Was The Best Decision For My Mental Health And Well-Being, social media can be addictive. However, sharing your content meaningfully and purposefully does not create addiction.

The key to social media productivity is allocating a specific time and remaining disciplined about your scheduled time. You can schedule any fun activity for mental health and productivity.

Based on my experience, this post introduces seven established platforms that freelance writers can use to amplify their content with minimal effort.

1 — LinkedIn

LinkedIn is used by more than 500 million professionals globally. LinkedIn is my favorite platform due to its audience. This network consists of professionals.

From my decades of experience, LinkedIn is relatively better monitored than other platforms. Over the years, with my posts and meaningful interactions, I gained around 25,000 followers on LinkedIn.

It offers a free and fee-based subscription service. I choose the subscription service as it provides extra capabilities for connecting to more people.

The subscription service also provides thousands of educational materials. In addition, you can find several well-documented training materials about freelance writing and other related content.

Sharing on LinkedIn is very easy. You can link your account to the writing platforms. You can also schedule LinkedIn posts using various automation tools.

In addition to your personal profile, you can share your content links on LinkedIn groups and pages. These three-way sharing mechanisms can bring you new followers and attract new readers to your profile.

In addition to the benefits of networking and sharing content, LinkedIn posts also gain higher visibility than other networks in search engines. This privilege is due to the high domain trust authority of LinkedIn.

I observed many content developers using LinkedIn productively. One of the most inspiring content developers on LinkedIn is Tim Denning, a reputable writer, blogger, and unique marketer with a significant number of followers globally. Tim provides useful guidance to freelance writers on the practical and productive use of LinkedIn. Like many of his regular readers, I find Tim’s posts inspiring, informative, and insightful.

2 — Facebook

Facebook is one of the largest global networks. According to Statista, it has over 2.85 billion monthly active users. India, the United States, and Indonesia are the top three countries.

Like LinkedIn, you can post your content link to your personal account, a page, and groups. Having your own freelance writing page can be beneficial. It allows you to share your content links and post content to supplement your writing practice.

Facebook groups are interactive. In addition to sharing your content link, you can also interact with readers and other content developers. This interaction can help you gain new subscribers and regular readers.

Due to the size of this network, your content links can gain substantial readers. I witnessed many articles and blog posts going viral on Facebook.

You can also use the commercial side of Facebook by advertising your content with a small budget to reach a broad audience, as I did in the promotion of my book recently.

3 — Twitter

Twitter has around 192 million daily active users.

Twitter is the most accessible and one of the most straightforward tools for writers to share and promote their content.

You can connect your Twitter account to almost every writing platform. When you link your Twitter account, your readers can easily share your content with a single click. This is very powerful. In addition, some platforms automatically tag you on Twitter so you can re-tweet to reach a broader audience.

You can also schedule your tweets using various free and subscription-based tools. They are inexpensive. These tools have different interfaces.

The critical point in scheduling is the uniqueness of your tweet, as Twitter does not accept identically duplicated tweets.

4 — Pinterest

Pinterest is special to me as, so far, my content has more impressions than other social media platforms, even though I invest less time in it. My posts receive over a million impressions monthly. Automating pins for Pinterest is easy using some productivity tools such as IFTTT.

When I started with Pinterest, initially, it did not resonate with me. I thought it was only for photos. However, when I learned practical ways to use this tool, I got hooked.

Contrary to common beliefs, Pinterest is a business tool. Pinterest is not just a fancy tool. It can be ideal for content developers and marketers too. For example, some of my entrepreneurial friends earned millions of dollars through Pinterest marketing.

I provided a step-by-step guide to using Pinterest Boards in this article.

5 — Quora

Quora is also an extensive network. It has approximately 300 million monthly users. The primary function of Quora is question and answer. The good news for freelance writers is Quora allows creating your own questions and answer them with links. In addition, you can share your content links meaningfully to attract subscribers and regular readers to your content.

In addition, Quora also has a content-sharing platform called Quora Spaces. This content-sharing platform can be ideal for freelance writers. Like LinkedIn and Facebook, you can share your content links via posts.

Furthermore, as of last month, you can now monetize your content on Quora and gain additional passive income by repurposing your content.

6 — Reddit

Reddit is one of the oldest and largest networks, with 52 million daily active users globally. It is the tenth most popular social network in the United States.

I have some concerns about Reddit. First, it is very restrictive, and sharing your content is not as easy as you can with LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Quora. Secondly, some members are unsupportive.

However, you can easily post your content links to your personal profile on Reddit. However, it is not possible to reach a broader audience with this approach.

Reddit is based on communities. Unfortunately, some communities are very protective and highly punitive. Even if you follow their rules, they arbitrarily remove your content and ban you for no apparent reason.

Automated censorship on Reddit is a problem. I posted high-quality and critical content for society, especially in the health and fitness domains, but some computerized tools immediately removed my posts for no reason.

However, there are also helpful communities on Reddit. Finding supportive communities is essential for being successful on Reddit. From my experience, after Facebook, Reddit is one of the most viral networks if you find a supportive community. I created one for writers. A few of my blog posts went viral on Reddit, amplified by supportive community members.

Here are my guiding articles about Reddit:

7 — YouTube Channels

I don’t have much experience with YouTube. I support a writing community successfully through a channel.

However, I witnessed some success stories of freelance writers who built an excellent reader base and subscribers using YouTube channels.

YouTube is a vast network. It is the second-largest search engine and content-sharing platform, with more than two billion monthly active users.

Freelance writers can introduce their writing profiles and share links to content. Video and voice are essential to succeed on YouTube.

Other Social Media Platforms

There are several other prominent social media platforms. However, my experience with them is minimal. Therefore, I did not add them to my top seven list.

Some of my collaborators and friends from freelance writing backgrounds use the following six platforms successfully.

1 — Instagram

2 — TikTok

3 — Snapchat

4 — WhatsApp

5 — Telegram

6 — WeChat

I am open-minded and optimistic about learning about these social media platforms. For example, I have an account on Instagram but only keep my books in there. I automatically share my blog posts on Telegram and share some content links in WhatsApp, mainly my long-term subscribers who have my phone number.

My next goal is to understand Tik Tok and Snapchat. These networks still look esoteric to me. I also want to learn about WeChat to reach an audience in China. I don’t know whether it is possible yet. We will find out.

Takeaways

I introduced seven established platforms that freelance writers can use to amplify their content with minimal effort based on my experience. You can compile and present all your social media networks with a single link using the free Linktree tool.

The serendipitous nature of social media platforms can bring tangible and intangible benefits to freelance writers in the long term if used properly. Therefore, promotion is essential for the success of freelance writers.

By promoting your content, you can gain new followers and subscribers. By meaningful engagements, you can transform them into your regular readers.

If you use social media productively, it is not a waste of time. On the contrary, as little as ten minutes of investment can bring significant benefits.

Despite its effectiveness and benefits, social media has some side effects, such as addiction and excessive good feel hormones in the brain. The key to social media productivity is allocating a specific time and remaining disciplined about your scheduled time.

We need to be aware of the immaturity in social media networks run by artificial intelligence. A little patience, tolerance, open-mindedness, and prudence can go a long way.
