“#Twitter is a place where one person can help another person anywhere in the world.” — @ TweetSmarter

“#Twitter makes me like people I don’t even know, and #Facebook makes me hate people I know in real life.” — @ betchaboy

The purpose of this story is to guide linking your Twitter account to your Medium account. This is an essential activity recommended for ILLUMINATION writers. I explain how to achieve this by highlighting the benefits.

The inspiration for this story comes from noticing many writers do not take advantage of this important tool. Many writers are also not aware of this feature and its benefits. Therefore, I want to raise awareness of this essential yet straightforward opportunity.

For example, I review and tweet hundreds of stories from ILLUMINATION daily. Unfortunately, only 20% of the writers seem to link their Twitter handles to their Medium accounts. I want to help the remaining 80% by creating simple steps in this story.

There are two known issues.

The first one is:

I know some writers have Twitter accounts as they follow me, and we share tweets. However, as their accounts are not linked to Medium, they cannot see my tweets and are missing a significant opportunity to retweet my tweets of their stories. In this story, my aim is to address this issue.

The second issue is:

Some writers have no Twitter account, and they miss a big opportunity of creating serendipity for their great stories. I highly recommend all writers create a Twitter account unless there are unique and compelling reasons for not doing it.

Even though Twitter may have some problems and is abused by some people, I still see Twitter as a serendipity tool for writers.

For example, I met many bloggers on Twitter who came across ILLUMINATION stories and started getting to know our publication. Some even have started submitting their stories to our publication.

To amplify and create further visibility to your stories and your profile, you need a Twitter account. Millions of people use Twitter globally.

And more importantly, you need to link your Twitter account to Medium account. This is a very simple activity.

The following are the steps you need to consider.

How to add a Twitter account to your Medium account

Step 1:

Click on your account picture on Medium.

You will see the following menu

Step 2:

From the Settings window, click on (the 2nd item) called Connections in the list.

Step 3:

You can select the second item to link your Twitter hand to your Medium account.

By the way, you can also link to your Facebook account.

Image: Showing Connections in Medium Settings

When you connect your Twitter to your Medium account, it shows the Twitter icon on your profile next to your followers, as shown in the following screen capture.

The Twitter icon also shows on your stories as shown in the following screen capture.

Medium stories also show Facebook and LinkedIn icons as depicted in the following screen capture taken from one of my recent stories.

This means that when a reader clicks on these icons, the article is posted to your Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts.

What do you need on Twitter?

When you receive a tweet of your article on your Twitter handle, ensure that you like and retweet it.

For example, Tim Maudlin has kindly tweeted my story by clicking on the Twitter icon in my story. I highlighted the “retweet” and the “like” buttons in the attached screen capture.

You can either retweet as is or with comments.

A comment could be a simple “thank you for RT” or tagging a follower.

That’s it. This whole activity shouldn’t take more than five minutes. And once configured, tweeting a story on Medium takes a second, and retweeting your tweet takes another second. It is easy and not time-consuming.

Beware of Twitter addiction, though! Like any other social media tool, Twitter can cause addiction and may become a distraction for your writing practice, as I pointed out in the attached story.

It will be useful to add @illum_official and @medium to your tweets so that when your followers retweet your stories, the tweet also goes to our publication and the Medium Twitter handle.

Adding hashtags related to the keywords of your story can be useful. All you need to do is use the # sign and add a keyboard. For example the hashtags I commonly use #writing #writers #blogging #writingcommunity #illumination #design #leadership #productivity

Conclusions

These quick steps will help you connect your Twitter handle to a Medium account. The benefit of this connection is that you can see the tweets of your stories on your Twitter handle, like them, and retweet them.

Your stories can reach out to a broader audience with likes and retweets.
