“Collecting Smiles” Six Words & a Photo: November Conclusion

SWPSC: “Collecting Smiles” & Freestyle Stories — November Conclusion

My son smiles — my heart sings.

Children have the gift of appreciating the little things. They look in wonder at the world, marveling, joyful. Even a small gift seems like a big thing to them because they have the knack for living in the moment.

I have enjoyed numerous moments like these with my son. Every time we asked him what he wanted for any occasion, pat came his answer: books.

One such moment was when one of our relatives visited and took him to a nearby bookshop. Oh, he always had a list of books he wanted. So, he went straight to the set you see above, and shyly requested it with a softly spoken “don't buy it if it is expensive”. Coming for a six-year-old, that’s charming, no? We must have taught him well.

Anyway, the relative got him only half the set. My mom quickly planned a trip to the store and got the remaining three in the series for my son. I will never forget the happiness on his face when she gave the books to him. Much cuddling ensued. I am always grateful that he's affectionate and shows it.

Wonderful memories that keep me smiling!

Tenali Raman was renowned for his brilliant wit, wisdom, and humor. He was an Indian poet, scholar, thinker, and special advisor in the court of the great Vijayanagar king Krishnadevaraya, who ruled from C.E. 1509 to 1529. We grew up listening to many stories that carried great life lessons.

November “Collecting Smiles” Challenge Conclusion led by me, Vidya Sury!

Gratitude to SWPSC creator and editor, Mary Chang Story Writer, and co-editors, Ellie Jacobson & Sandi Parsons, for their ongoing efforts in handling submissions.

Special shout-outs to Sandi for “Don’t erase that smile”; I won’t, Sandi — your posts always give me the giggles with your subtle humor — I loved the prize box descriptions in your post, and to Mary for “How to play with nature” — she simply blew me away with her sand art that forms the essence of this month’s prompt! 🥰 What can I say? I also loved this from Mary and this from Sandi!

Editors’ Picks for “Collecting Smiles” Challenge

My heartfelt thanks to all the contributing writers this month for sharing your “Collecting Smiles” stories. I was thrilled to see the photos; every submission made me smile, giggle, or laugh! I truly enjoyed the diversity in interpreting the prompt.

What can I say? Mission accomplished! Thank you for joining me in collecting smiles! There’s truth in the quote: Smile and the world smiles with you. Not going to complete that quote 😉

We selected 24 stories out of 90+ submissions for the Smiles Challenge that stood out to us for different reasons. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ellie wasn’t able to participate in making picks this month. We miss your energy Ellie, and hope to reconnect soon! I selected 12 stories and Sandi and Mary selected 6 stories each.

For the “Collecting Smiles” category, check out the latest stories under the “Monthly Challenge” tab. For all stories in this category, check out this tab.

Twelve Editor Picks by Vidya for “Collecting Smiles” Challenge

It is really tough to choose among so many gorgeous photos and stories, but I’ve managed to guiltily pick these!

Rodrigo S-C did not know Tona was German. Neither did I. Good to know — but look at that smiling boy in the mural! Gorgeous no? And yes, I felt he was looking right at me!

Charlene Marron’s post made me happy — I would certainly like to find this sign when I go to the parking lot! After all, we thrive on hope!

I feel Osan Fernando’s beautiful sentiment when she says “If only those smiles could be put in a big box, I would do so.” Her photo is no less than a painting to me with Nature’s perfect brush strokes!

Denise Darby, nature’s smiles are indeed in the details. What a beautiful closeup of a sunflower. It certainly made me smile!

Oh, Jason Edmunds! Nothing compares to bathroom humor! Giggling all the way!

The handsome PupperJack’s expression is so cute! Thank you, Susan Alison! Cannot help but reflect PupperJack’s smile!

Seize the day! says Divina Grey, whose words and photos are always thought-provoking. Talk about seeing the silver lining in a wound!

kasey sparks is my kind of gal — see how she brought her own smile!

Just a bit envious of how Shubha Apte wakes up in the morning! Hello, birdy!

Stephanie Tolk’s cheerful photo of “baby breads” comes with a reflective story about how death need not be sad. What a fresh take on the subject, connecting with the Dia de Los Muertos, a beautiful tradition!

jules’ bright red converse definitely made me smile, reminding me of my own pair. What’s more, I have identical socks too!

To wrap up this list, let’s enjoy some honey candy with JoAnn Ryan’s bear with the goofy smile, offering you treats. I love it when we come across sights like this!

Six Editor Picks by Sandi for “Collecting Smiles” Challenge

I can’t go past Kim McKinney’s pretty pink pigs! Every time I see them in their Santa getup, it makes me smile!

I’m ultra jealous that Judy Walker has the best lamp ever. Her lightning bug lamp is gorgeous!

There’s something other-worldly about K. Joseph’s selfie in My Commute. The lighting and reflection from the door provide a spooky effect, making this photo strangely compelling. I feel like there could be a sci-fi story in there somewhere.

I’m a sucker for a good dog story, so Allisonn Church’s story drew me in.

The only thing better than dogs is a splendid happy snap of a puppy. As Mia Verita says, they take joy in the simplest of pleasures.

And my final pick (surprise! it’s another dog story!) goes to K. Barrett because Rotto is in complete agreement — tantalizing aromas really do need to be worn!

Six Editor Picks by Mary for “Collecting Smiles” Challenge

Randy Runtsch I have a crush on Randy’s sweet photo stories — they often make me smile like this one surely did!

Nancy Oglesby Wellness, Yep, I know you’re thinking awwww…the second you see this sweet pup. I certainly was.

Enjoyed arun’s different take on the Collecting Smiles challenge. Makes you wonder and appreciate. How delightful it is that the smile of this beheaded statue survived the crash.

I enjoyed Penny Grubb’s optimism and take on the challenge. Fresh laundry drying outside on a clothesline also triggered fond childhood memories for me!

pockett dessert I truly admire pockett’s keen attention to detail and her observation skills for noticing unusual smiles that we come across in our lives — like this cool shot.

Jillian Amatt — Artistic Voyages, oh oh oh! Who doesn’t love a surprise rainbow as you’re scrolling through the photos you took that day? Love this magical shot — it lit up my day!

Editor Picks for Freestyle Stories

“Freestyle” Stories

For the “Freestyle” category, check out the latest stories under the “Freestyle” tab. For all freestyle stories, check out this tab. Mary, Sandi, and I enjoyed reviewing all the freestyle stories. For November highlights, I selected 2 stories, and Sandi and Mary each selected 1 story that resonated with us.

Here are 4 “Freestyle” stories that wowed for different reasons — out of 20+ freestyle submissions to this publication for November.

Four stories that wowed Freestyle:

Vidya’s Freestyle Picks

Gauri Sirur’s story was both informative and humorous and made me laugh so much. And look at the photo! Amazing!

I found Paul Gardner’s post poignant — and a great reminder to live, and smile.

Sandi’s Freestyle Pick

CARMEN F MICSA, MA in English, podcaster’s Fancy Pumpkins was delightful. I’ve added pumpkins with succulents to my I Should Try This One Day list.

Mary’s Freestyle Pick

Erika Burkhalter’s puppy friend definitely stole the spotlight in the sunset in this shot with Bandit inspecting the puddle.

This article officially ends the November “Collecting Smiles” Challenge, and no further submissions will be accepted.

Thanks again, everyone! ❤
