Photography, Shine! Summer Prompt
“Shine!” Six Words & a Photo: July & August Conclusion
SWPSC: “Shine!” & Freestyle Stories — Summer Conclusion
Stanley Park shines through crystal ball.
Summer’s almost over, but I predict my view of Vancouver’s famous Stanley Park will transform through fall, winter, and spring, as will the stories in this publication.
Summer “Shine!” Challenge Conclusion
Gratitude to our editors, Ellie Jacobson, Sandi Parsons & Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles, for their ongoing efforts in handling submissions for the past two months. Special shout out to Ellie for her “What Makes You Shine?” story (story hugged my heart), to Sandi for her “Being an Auntie” story (a unicorn shine obsession, and the best auntie ever, I bet!), and to Vidya for “The Mirror” (love the burst of shine Vidya receives when she holds this magical mirror.)
Editors’ Picks for Shine! Challenge
Thank you to all the contributing writers this month for sharing your diverse Shine! stories — it was a pleasure reviewing the stories for this diverse prompt. We selected 20 stories (out of 150+ submissions) for the Shine! Challenge that either stood out, were unusual or vibrant, or delivered a message that hugged our hearts, made us laugh, or inspired us. Each editor selected 5 stories.
For the “Shine!” category, check out the latest stories under the “Monthly Challenge” tab. For all stories in this category, check out this tab.
Editor Picks by Mary for Shine! Challenge
Flashdance Wannabe — this photo and story by Judy Walker delighted me! Even plants can come to life to shine — by dancing!
Great Morning Shine barn story by Kim McKinney — an NFL football player embraces his wealth by giving back to the community to feed the hungry while teaching his children the meaning of work and giving to others less fortunate.
Always a joy to Rise & Shine with pockett dessert’s soulful stories and stunning photography.
A clever take on the Shine! Challenge with a unique photo perspective with the lovely locks of hair and shadows by Tabula Rasa. Who knew Warm Concrete could transform your day?
Kris Cochran’s photo in the “Right Light” caught my eye right away — did this magnificent bird pop out of a fairytale or the dinosaur age?
Editor Picks by Ellie for Shine! Challenge
Osan Fernando captured the shine and beauty of fall leaves in this photo — who else is excited for autumn to begin?!
I love how the shining light is casting a glow below the bare trees. What a great shot by Barb Dalton 🇺🇦.
I want to sit on the bench in Sanghita Pal’s shining photo. I love how the tree frames this image of the sky meeting the sea.
I’m a sucker for tree shots, and Divina Grey captured a shining moment while looking up in this photo.
I love how the light brings such softness to the flowers in this photo by Kaori Mitsui.
Editor Picks by Sandi for Shine! Challenge
I can never scroll past a good dog story, and Nicole Anders delivered the goods with a delightfully happy stray dog.
Penny Grubb’s Caped Crusader also delivered the goods with an egg fetish. (Chilli is full of sympathy — she too has been called portly!)
Judy Walker captured a stunning moment with a broken cherub and a shining rainbow.

Lisa McAully delivered all the info you need to know about Dragon Fruit — summed up with a single sentence A warning before you plant one: the dragon fruit plant is a jerk.
Jason Edmunds served up a delightfully refreshing drink!
Editor Picks by Vidya for Shine! Challenge
Being the last to come in with my editor’s picks, I first want to say that I loved Mary’s Ellie’s, and Sandi’s picks. While wishing I could make my list really long, here are my five favorites.
Rhonda Carrier has the amazing talent to capture shadows in her photos. After stressing over which of her fabulous photos to choose, I picked this. Inspiring words told me I need more sunshine! Also, I can never resist a yellow flower!
Shubha Apte’s photo of her balcony garden and story was a meditation experience for me. So soothing, so uplifting! (And I am just a wee bit envious of her plants!)
I love Dennett’s photography and writing and had missed her during her absence. This story of hers brought a lump to my throat. I am sending her good vibes and holding her in my heart and prayers. May things get better soon for her and Ben. Now, enjoy this beautiful photo — it is the sort of pic that gives me a mini mental vacay.
I admire David Acaster, his photos, and his writing. I enjoyed this trip to The Fisherman’s Chapel in St Brelade’s Bay. I love monuments and found the story about the chapel interesting.
I enjoy Indra Raj Pathak’s philosophical stories, and as a lover of nature, this one spoke to me. Nature truly is the best teacher.
Editor Picks for Freestyle Stories
“Freestyle” Stories
For the “Freestyle” category, check out the latest stories under the “Freestyle” tab. For all freestyle stories, check out this tab. Ellie, Sandi, Vidya, and I enjoyed reviewing all the freestyle stories. For July & August highlights, we each selected 3 stories that resonated with us.
Here are 12 “Freestyle” stories that wowed for different reasons —out of about 100 freestyle submissions to this publication for the last two months.
12 stories that wowed Freestyle:
Mary’s Freestyle Picks
Love the perspective of this photo and story by newbie Medium writer Toni Hayes. Welcome to Medium, Toni!
Wouldn’t it be a blast to go on a road trip with Anne Bonfert? Check out the antelope she caught!
Wondrous simplicity here with Ian Hanson. I fantasized about taking off, traveling in this wheeled beauty, and becoming a minimalist. This photograph draws people in and captures the ideal six-word story to go along with it. Plus, doesn’t everybody love a great butt?
Ellie’s Freestyle Picks
I love the angle Diana Lotti took this picture of this street in Cologne, Germany, highlighting the stunning architecture from the streets to the church steeple.
Love this closeup photo of Miss Uma by Erika Burkhalter. There is always something haunting about a cat’s eyes (that says…get that thing off my head LOL).
Thank you to everyone who joined in the book stack freestyle challenges. I loved seeing all the different types of books out there and your creativity in spelling your name. I must give 5 stars to Sanghita Pal for her excellent stack of books. And a great photo as well!
Sandi’s Freestyle Picks
Shereen Bingham took us on a delightful fairy tale walk — who wouldn’t want to take a trek through those woods?
Gauri Sirur took us on a delightful tango.
Franzi Kinzel had an important message to impart that I couldn’t ignore.
Vidya’s Freestyle Picks
As I hummed the song by Sting with the same title, I loved Rodrigo S-C’s perfectly framed photo and story — it literally lulled me into a soothing state until I read the last line. Oops.
B.R. Shenoy’s adorable photo turned me into a babbling mess. Who can resist a pup who almost hides? Look at those eyes peeking out at you! See if you can solve this rather easy mystery!
I enjoyed nareeta martin’s gorgeous photo and story. I’ve never seen an artichoke flower before and just couldn't take my eyes off it. That color! Nareeta writes beautifully descriptive stories!
