Summer Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shine!”
Kohl Rabi is my stage name.
If a turnip and a radish got together for some summer lovin’, they’d make a baby and name her Kohl Rabi (kohlrabi).
When Keath and I talked of planting a garden this past spring (he’s a seasoned gardener, while I’m more of a produce-isle gatherer), I brought up the crazy idea of growing kohlrabi.
His eyes lit up. “I forgot about kohlrabi,” he said. “I loved it as a kid. Let’s do it!”
We poured the tiny black seeds into our palms and did our best to follow the instructions on the packet even though half a meter between rows seemed a little excessive, considering the size of the seeds.
“Sleep tight and happy birthing,” I whispered as I covered the black specks with a spattering of dirt.
When the first green shoots appeared above the soil ten days later, I was as excited as a kid taking her first lick of ice cream. I couldn’t believe it! We were having kohlrabi babies. Dozens of them.
Over the next three months, the babies grew into robust vegetables with powerful stocks and wide leaves, the kohlrabi belly being the brains of the operation.
Yesterday, I pulled one out from its garden nest and held it up for Keath to see .He grabbed the hose and cleaned the dirt off the roots.
“Oh, my gawd!” I said. “She’s doing the Water Scene from Flashdance.”
I snapped the pic and took our famous veggie into the kitchen to do what she does best. Fill our bellies.
