What Makes You Shine?
Summer Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shine!”

The above photo was taken on July 13, 2018, on my 45th birthday.
Each year, my kids ask me what I want for my birthday. I respond, “To spend time with you.” That’s all I need.
I remember that beautiful day as we ended the birthday celebration with dinner and a long walk. I try not to focus on birthdays and the number. Half the time I can’t remember how old I even am, as time seems to be shifting faster and faster.
But a nagging, negative voice reminded me that evening, “You’re almost 50” as if that is a bad thing. As if it’s over at 50. Instead, I look at those time markers as motivation. To make the leap at going back to college, to complete that half-finished bachelor's degree. To get after those dreams and turn them into a version of reality.
This year for my 49th birthday, I spent the day in a similar fashion with my kids outside in nature under the rays of sunshine. They teased, “You’re almost 50, Mom. Almost a half century!”
I responded, “I sure am. Can’t wait to see what the next half century brings my way!”
They are my shine source each and every day.
