Sparks №6 — Getting Cozy Around the Campfire

Weekly inspiration from Flint & Steel

Photo by Brooke Lewis from Pexels

Can you believe October 1st is Friday?! Life speeds up with the kids back in school, which is a good thing, but my sense of time seems to be flying out the window.

I wish we could all sit around a large bonfire, roasting smores and chat the evening away. That is my favorite family time activity during the fall months, hoping winter stays away for as long as possible.

The shorter days with crisp mornings guide me to coziness wrapped in an old knitted sweater with a cup of tea and a journal by my side. Memories of my mother spill over as the days creep to her birthday during this month. We would take long walks admiring the changing colors around us, chatting about our day and the upcoming holiday season.

What do you love about fall?

Any special fall memories when you were younger?

@2021 Ellie Jacobson

Around Medium: Calls for Submissions, Writing Prompts, and Challenges

As always review each publication’s guidelines for their prompts. Many prompts do not have a set deadline.

Make sure when you are responding to a prompt, you credit where your inspiration came from, like a link to the prompt article.

Many of these prompts could fall under nonfiction, poetry and fiction so don’t limit yourself. There is no right or wrong. Use these prompts as a springboard to your writing.

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她), with The Brain is a Noodle, What’s the weirdest gift you have received or given to others? What was the story behind it?”

Write a poem, essay, short-form article.

If your a fiction writer, use this as a prompt for one of your characters. Will that object be a part of your story?

kasey sparks wants to know, “What’s Your Go-To Dance Song?

I’m working on my response and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who still has CD (yes!). You can submit your response wherever you wish. If you submit your article to Flint & Steel, make sure to credit the writing prompt from Kasey.

Katlyn Gallo, with Unwritten Journal, announced an October writing challenge; there are four writing topics for your October submissions. Visit her page for more info.

Trista Signe Ainsworth, with Thank You Notes, wants you to share an essay, article, or poem about your dream. I’m working on my article about the journey to reconnecting with my childhood dream.

Jolie A. Doggett, with Creators Hub, has three new writing prompts this week (and every week). Remember you can write about these prompts at any point. If you would like to publish your article here at Flint & Steel, submit away!

Make sure to sign up for the Medium creator workshops too. I found the ones over the summer inspiring. If you can’t make it to the live workshops, you can always find the sessions recorded to view later.

  • When was the last time you cried?
  • What’s your superpower?
  • Share a meaningful quote

Mindy Morgan Avitia, with Cultivate which is a new pub (congrats), announced an October personal essay contest. The deadline is October 16th and the winner will receive $250.

Diana C. always posts the most inspiring writing prompts. Remember they do not have a deadline so you can use these as a springboard for your article any time.

Haley Whitehall posted an interesting prompt for fiction writers. Is one of your characters grieving? Pick one of the stages of grief outlined in the article to expand on that with your fictionalized character. Make sure to tag Haley if you use her writing prompt.

Zane Dickens, with Microcosm, announced their September prompt, pick a new genre. Now in this final week in September, you must pick one of the three micro-genres listed in the article (looks like fun I must say!) And make sure to follow Microcosm on Twitter for even more writing prompts to get those creative juices flowing!

J.A. Taylor, with Centina Pentina, shared this awesome microfiction prompt: auto incorrect. Ya know, when that darn autocorrect goes wrong, very wrong?!
