Summary

The article draws an allegory between a lighthouse and the wisdom of the elderly, emphasizing the importance of guidance in navigating life's challenges.

Abstract

The author likens a lighthouse to a wise elder, solitary yet essential in guiding sailors through treacherous waters. The lighthouse, despite its vulnerable appearance, stands firm, providing light for safe passage. This symbolizes how the wisdom of the elderly is crucial for people of all ages and experiences. Young individuals, compared to reckless yachts, and more experienced middle-aged individuals, likened to cruise ships, both require guidance to avoid peril. The article suggests that just as sailors rely on a lighthouse's beam to navigate, individuals should seek and heed the advice of those with greater life experience to ensure a smooth journey through life. The piece concludes with the author reflecting on their own 15-minute writing exercise inspired by a creative writing prompt by Ellie Jacobson, encouraging readers to engage with the prompt themselves.

Lighthouse: A Wise Elderly Stood In Solitude

A beacon in the dark

A lighthouse always reminds me of a lonely wise older man. He might look vulnerable with his hunched back and emaciated body, but he stands there firmly and shines to provide directions to those sailing in the ocean.

A reckless young man is like a yacht that hardly survives the storm. A middle-aged man with more life experience is like a cruise ship, huge, but will sink if he hits rocks.

Regardless of size, a ship that wants to sail safely would look for the beacon in the dark. The same goes for life; a person who wants a smooth journey would look for wise advice from those elder and wiser.

A sailor must learn to navigate his ship according to the light emitted by the lighthouse; one must learn to listen to the advice shared by someone who has more life experience.
