Lighthouse Creative Writing Prompt
Inspiration for fiction and nonfiction writers

“Lighthouses are not just stone, brick, metal, and glass. There’s a human story at every lighthouse; that’s the story I want to tell.” — Elinor Dewire
Last month, my family and I visit Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Inspiration struck as I toured the lighthouse, the keeper’s home, and the lighthouse grounds.
What was it like living there in basic isolation? For the lightkeeper? For the family?
I also wondered why people were drawn to lighthouses? My mother was one such person. She collected anything with a lighthouse: puzzles, books, artwork.
Writing prompt
What is the story you want to tell involving a lighthouse? Freewrite around the idea of a lighthouse. Write for 15 minutes. What comes to mind? Let your mind wander. The light. Isolation. Serving as a beacon for others.
