Welcome to the Flint & Steel Publication

Submission guidelines (updated June 2022)

Flint & Steel is a publication to inspire and spark your creativity, whether you write fiction or nonfiction. As a writer, I gravitate towards writing prompts and challenges. They are the fuel to my freewriting each morning. I want this publication to serve as a pit stop for your writing.

Vision

As I was completing the 30-day article challenge, I envisioned this publication as a place for writing inspiration.

The articles I will post and welcome for submissions are:

• Writing prompts. Write a story in response to any of the Flint & Steel prompts you will find in our articles and newsletters. Our prompts, except for writing challenge contests, do not have deadlines.
• Write your own story with a prompt. Ask writers to post articles in response.
• Responses to writing prompts and challenges from ANY Medium publication. Please make sure to reference the source of the prompt as well.
• Inspiring craft books and resources.
• The craft of writing. Fiction and nonfiction writing tips and instruction.
• How-to’s on staying organized as a creative.
• Weekly round-ups on Medium prompts/challenges.
• Short-form posts about writing challenges and contests (your own or from other publications and writers).
• Your writing and art spaces.
• Your fiction, short stories, flash, and poetry.
• Book reviews. Tell us about your book recommendations. A roundup. A book review.

Be a Writer

To be added as a writer for Flint & Steel, leave the response, “I want to be a writer with your Medium username” in the comments to this post. I will add you within 24–48 hours.

General Guidelines

• Writers must abide by the Medium Rules.
• Be kind, courteous, and professional.
• All photos must be your own or uncopyrighted. You can find images here on Medium via Unsplash and at Pexels for example. Use the photo caption space to give credit to the photographer or write “photo by author.”
• Cite quotes and references as needed for your article.
• Let’s create a community here. Interact and support your fellow writers. Read, highlight, comment, follow your fellow Flint & Steel writers. It’s the best way to spread the word about your writing.

Publication Guidelines

• Once you are added as a writer, submit your draft by using the “add to publication” feature.
• Must follow Medium guidelines (see above).
• Add the tag “Flint and Steel.”
• Add a main photo with proper photo citation.
• Use Title/subtitle format.

Submission Review Process

• Please allow 24–48 hours for submission review. Generally, I edit and publish your piece within 24 hours, but sometimes life happens.
• I will review tags and perform basic copyediting on all articles.
• As my way of supporting each writer, I will highlight, clap and leave a comment on each article. I will also tweet your article.
