An Introduction to ILLUMINATION’S Mirror
A publication created to address Medium constraints for editors

I posted a story reflecting our recent issue of not being able to add editors for our increasing workload. I shared the implications and impact of not being able to add editors to ILLUMINATION in these challenging times.

Not Only Disappointed But Also Annoyed
After three days of my urgent support request, Medium finally responded today with disappointing news.
Medium advises that they don’t allow more than 30 editors per publication. The only good news is they won’t remove our additional editors.
My understanding from the Help-desk email, this restriction was decided due to a bug. They want to prevent abuse. I don’t understand what abuse means in this context, hope they will share it publicly.
ILLUMINATION needs more than 30 editors considering the workload created by over 7,000 writers. Even the current 42 editors cannot handle the load therefore I asked for more help from the community.
The interest from the writers' community was impressive. I am honored by the level of support.
What is ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR
As an inventor, I know that necessity is the mother of invention.
To overcome this hurdle, as a workaround, I created a mirror publication to give a chance to new editors to help us and share the workload of the publication.
Many editors showed interest after my announcement of this story.
I added some of our top writers to the publication as editors.
We started onboarding these great editors.
They will cross-pollinate with our current editors and learn the process quickly. I will be adding more editors in the upcoming days.
This unexpected workaround situation and its implementation details keep me very busy now.
The strategy and design phase is complete but the implementation of this workaround can take some time. A lot of coordination and orchestration are required.
Even though this was the unexpected situation of limiting editors for our publications, I am still grateful and optimistic that this solution will help us scale better. It will help us balance our load.
We are creating a system to balance the workload between two publications.
I created a model of the publication using ideas from digital twins. To test the model I transferred a few of my recent stories from ILLUMINATION. Some editors started populating with their stories and informing the writers.
Today many more writers joined and we informed them about our situation and added them to the mirror publication. You can meet our new writers from this link.
Challenge and Plan
Since Medium does not allow editors to transfer stories from one publication to another, we need to find ways to communicate with our 11,000+ writers to start transferring or submitting some of their new stories to the mirror publication.
I will work hard with our supportive editors and accelerate the set-up of this new venture and will provide a detailed explanation of the rationale and process in an upcoming post.
As pointed out before, I am not only cloning the publication as a new mirror but also now working on metaphorically cloning Dew Langrial to have more supportive editors for our writers.
