July Writing Challenge
Links for 31 days of music

Bossa Nova is a lush, mellow and exhilarating fusion of samba, jazz and Brazilian folk worth discovering again and again. My soul takes a bath in the sound.
The “new wave” of sound emerged from Brazil’s Ipanema neighbourhood in the late 50s. Bossa Nova has infused by jazz stylings globally, and has deep folk underpinnings that are deceptively out of scope for the average North American, including myself. Under its soothing guise, Bossa Nova was a highly artistic, modern movement and a form of cultural resistance to dictatorship. Afro-Brazilian Jazz was my official gateway to the rich sounds of Bossa Nova beyond the “Girl from Ipanema”, a song that changed pop music all over the world.
The sound made waves among jazz masters like Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis and proponents of the cool jazz scene. The genre still enriches current music and influenced bands from Stereolab to Thievery Corporation.
Bossa Nova translates our moods into a soft, undulating flow of energy with a hint of melancholy that may dance and lounge as it pleases. Ultimately, it is a celebration of life and love.
Summer is a ripe atmosphere for Bossa Nova, but it is also timely respite from the heavy chaos we are enduring.
I wrote a poem or story inspired by bossa nova (below) and asked anyone to join who wanted to write about summer and music for July. Terry Barr stepped up and contributed 8 stunning stories capturing the inflections of music in our summers of past. Thank you so much, Terry!
Please have a look below. Enjoy & thank you to Noah Levy for hosting.
