When the Stars Were Bright

A poetic tribute to Coltrane through bossa nova

“144 Trio Jazz” by Cesare Catina, 2015. Wikimedia Commons. Public Domain via OTRS.

crackling horn gold, galvanizes immaterial air blue pigment blows electric onto street light show swells in sky deep a ligature of flame carries spell leashing the wind like longing star that refuses to fade

Notes: Inspired by John Coltrane’s instrumental performance of “Bahia” (by Ary Barroso). The song has an interesting history with notable versions. I was first introduced to Herbie Mann’s lovely, sauntering flute version, heavy on percussion, after Getz & Byrd, who need to be let off a leash.

Frankly speaking, Coltrane’s rendition is off the hook (and I’ve a weakness for the intensity of hard bop). This version has such a dynamic visual element, I had to make it about sight.

The lyrics, where the title was taken, were rewritten in English and differ from the Portuguese; however, both meditate on longing.

Written for the July Summer Music Challenge where I wrote a poem or story about bossa nova for 31 days. See below for all entries including Terry Barr’s 8 brilliant memoirs about summer and music:
