Until You Wear Me Out

A poetic tribute to Jorge Ben

Jorge Ben e o Trio Mocotó no Teatro da Lagoa, 1971. Wikimedia Commons

Swing me, golden voice shuffling, scat me fragments of glee until my heart’s warm and worn polyrhythmic friction pacing me, samba footprints pulse my bones

Notes: Inspired by Jorge Ben’s “Balança Pema,” which brings pure joy, lightness and a very different feeling from the works explored so far. His style is unconventional, playful and warm and his lyrics can be evasive. I feel I have heard him in Devendra Banhart and I could spend the rest of my summer listening to Samba Esquema Novo.

Ben is responsible for writing “Mas Que Nada!” (the first track on the album).

The lyrics of “Balança Pema,” subject to some translative guessing, are as uplifting as the sound.

Written for the July Summer Music Challenge where I wrote a poem or story about bossa nova for 31 days. See below for all entries including Terry Barr’s 8 brilliant memoirs about summer and music:
