In the Air
A poetic tribute to Rio

Homeward, my soul I cannot romance the air engine against wind to soar back trembling choreography as thrust propels body to love my heart rivets to your shapes steeling myself for return as leaden feather dances with gravity I root eyes on your hills decelerate take open arms of shore in exhaling breeze I stand, redeemed kiss your earth salt in the sea
Notes: Inspired by Tom Jobim’s “Samba do Avião.” Antônio Carlos Jobim’s name has been as ubiquitous this month but I have not featured him alone singing in his unique, lovely and heartening falsetto.
The lyrics capture the romance of flying home, stemmed in Jobim’s relief from landing due to his intense fear of flying. The wonderful blog Lyrical Brazil has a beautiful account of the song including a poetic and humorous letter from Jobim to his wife about his terrifying flight to America. I drew a fair amount of inspiration for this poem from the letter.
