Rebellious Heart
A poetic tribute for Chico Buarque

The rosebush still emerged from sunburned soil risking its thorns from decay taking water back from crosscurrent of faith
We refuse to offer souls to an undertaker of this garden lest the rose be dead
In its unbowing head the concentric rings, revolving, the chest I move to breathe In the old blood, riptide a circle free revolting In the veins, music lives against the current swim
We are alive despite the fire and circle of time
Notes: Inspired by the song “Roda Vida” (Life Circle or Circle of Life) by living legend, singer, lyricist and writer Chico Buarque. Buarque was imprisoned under the military dictatorship in Brazil in 1967 for this song. Rolling Stone named it in the top 10 of all Brazilian popular songs.
The “undercurrent of nostalgic tragedy” in his songs that befit the bossa nova spirit are also full of metaphor that evade censorship to his political resistance to the regime.
The English lyrics are included in subtitle for the live video recording below, which is intense and gripping. The song is a helpless warning about the threat to artistic expression. While the “wheel” could be time, for which we have no control, its destructive connotations point to the regime, which faster than time, has taken away the sacred samba circle and even the Brazilian harbouring of nostalgia for a time with more optimism and freedom. I have written hope into my poetic tribute by utilizing the concept of the rose from the lyrics (life, socialism) as an “inner circle” of free will.
