Four Months After the Start of My Erotica Author Project — Momentum Is Back
After a one-month break in October, it took the whole of November to get the ball rolling again. Read today what was necessary to reach this goal.
Rapid start and steep fall
After I published my first erotic short story on Amazon on August 4th this year, things quickly developed very promisingly for me. I published a new story of about 5000 words every two or three days and sold it for 2,99€.
It didn’t take long until I earned my first 100€ in one month. For comparison: On Medium, it took me more than a year.
My tactic was to publish a series of thematically related individual stories first and then combine them into a bundle later. This tactic worked very well with the first series, which was six volumes long. The resulting anthology went straight into the Top 100 erotic novels and stories in the German Kindle Store and stayed there for several days.
Since I also registered my books in Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program, I also earn money from borrowed books and the read pages from this program.
In short, everything turned out very well for me. Then I made two mistakes. First, I chose topics for the next series that didn’t serve any particular niche, and second, I only wrote four volumes before I made a bundle.
The sales and borrowings fell short of those of the first series. That would have been the time to switch to a more lucrative niche and write at least six new stories in quick succession, and then bundle them together again.
Unfortunately, I had to finish my next thriller precisely at that time. My thrillers are my primary source of income, so I could not neglect them for an experiment. This led to the fact that I didn’t publish a new short story in October. That month I sold only eleven copies of a portfolio of now ten single volumes and two bundles. In September, I had sold well over forty books.
November: Feeding the Beast
After my new thriller was online and sold well, I turned back to my interrupted erotica project. This time I decided to publish ten single stories first before I made a bundle of them.
An analysis of the erotica charts in the German Kindle Store had shown me that the top ranks are mainly dominated by anthologies that are at least three hundred pages long. So to reach this mark, I had to bundle at least ten stories.
It also showed that the bundles, which had good rankings, sometimes stayed in the top ten for weeks. That was another important reason for my decision.
Milfs is a very successful niche in this country, so I chose it for my series. So I had a clear plan now: Write ten stories of at least 5000 words in the selected niche as soon as possible, link them as a series on Amazon and bundle the ten stories at the earliest one week after the tenth volume is published.
In November, I published the first seven stories of the new series. At the end of the month, I was able to generate 43 sales and was back to the level of September.
December had a solid start. On December 2nd, I published the eighth volume of the series, and two days later, I had the first full sell-through of the series. This means that someone bought all eight volumes in one day. In the first six days of the month alone, I had sixteen sales as a result. If the month continues to run as it has started, I can reach eighty sales in December, almost double of my most successful month yet. At the same time, the borrowings continue to increase.
The eighth volume of the series has also achieved the best ranking in the Erotica charts that I have had so far. The book has climbed to 35th place. It is now in the top 50 for the seventh day in a row.
Yesterday was also the first day that I had over 1000 read pages from the Kindle Unlimited program for my erotic stories.
The next steps
This week, or next week at the latest, I plan to release the last two volumes of the new series. After that, I will wait seven days and then publish the big bundle.
I hope this bundle will make it into the top 10 and stay there as long as possible. This should give a significant additional boost to the read pages.
If it works out the way I hope, I will continue to write series of ten volumes each. I would then have a blueprint for the year 2021.
Now I must maintain the momentum permanently and never pause for a whole month again. I am confident that I will reach 200 € per month mark for the first time in December. In the course of the first half of 2021, I will then aim for 1000 €.
I will continue to keep you informed and hope that today’s article has again given you exciting insights into my experiment.
