My Journey as an Erotica Writer Continues — Five Sales in One Day
My readers always become active in the evening. Yesterday nothing happened all day, but just before midnight I suddenly had a new sales record.
Sometimes Amazon still surprises me. It’s been almost a week since the release of volume four of my erotic short story series, and I had expected that new sales would only start when I released the next volume.
All guidebooks say that you have to publish at least two stories a week if you want sales to continue. Otherwise, the old books will be buried by the numerous new releases of the competition and will not be found by the readers.
It looked like the experts were right all day yesterday. I had almost no pages read, and only in the late afternoon, there was a sale. I didn’t think more would happen that day.
But I was thoroughly wrong. When I went to bed at eleven, I already had three sales. That was more than I had ever had in one day. But the surprise became even bigger when I got up this morning and checked my KDP Dashboard first thing. I was shown five sales for the day yesterday. I couldn’t believe it.
This almost doubled my earnings overnight. Until yesterday, I had only earned a little more than twelve Euros from sales since the release of volume one. Today the counter stands at 20.27 euros.
My read pages via Kindle unlimited yesterday were rather low. But that’s a phenomenon that I also see in my thrillers. There are days when people buy more than average but borrow less and vice versa.
So I started the new day motivated anyway.
Volume five is finally online
Today I finished the fifth part of the series, which I started yesterday, and uploaded it to Amazon. This time I’ll leave it at the German version for now, because as I wrote yesterday, I apparently need an editor for the English translations after all.
I think the new volume will be online this evening. Since my readers mainly buy late in the evening, I should get the first downloads for the new book today.
Why do my readers buy so late in the evening? Let’s face it — I write hardcore sex stories, and they are purchased and read for one reason only. You can guess what I mean.
So it makes sense that people buy or borrow the books just before bedtime. They download the books, relax while reading, and then fall asleep. As an author of erotica, you shouldn’t delude yourself in this respect. We do not write for people who expect a clever plot or deep characters. We write Smut.
I have no problem with producing disposable stories. I fulfill my writing ambitions with my thrillers.
Erotica is not written out of a desire to tell a story. You write in this genre to make money quickly and easily. Well, whether it’s really that easy will have to be shown to me in the next weeks and months, but in this case, money is my general motivation.
If you can’t get used to the idea that people masturbate while reading your books, you shouldn’t write in this genre. I don’t want to have to watch it either, but the thought alone doesn’t bother me.
My plan for tomorrow
I’m gonna write the first half of volume six. With the sixth volume, I finish the series, and then I start a new series.
Most of the time tomorrow, I will dedicate myself to my next thriller. I have found that it is better to have only one project in focus every day. I worked on it today as well, but only after I finished my erotic short story. Tomorrow, on the other hand, I’ll continue working on the thriller first thing in the morning and only switch to erotica in the afternoon for the last hour or two.
In the course of the day, I will also take care of my new twitter account. I neglected that a bit yesterday.
Tomorrow I’ll tell you how the fifth volume did on the first day of sale.
Until then I wish you a good time, and we’ll see each other here again tomorrow.
