I’ve Been Writing Erotica for Six Days. Here’s My Update.
Amazon US has still not released my first two volumes from the adult dungeon.
Things are better in German store but today the third volume was published in the US.
Problems in the American Shop
I should have known it. In all books and blogs about writing erotic stories, there are warnings that Amazon will punish a too revealing cover. I ignored these warnings and paid my dues.
The reason why I ignored all warnings was that I first published in the German Kindle Store. For both German books, the cover was no problem. Both books got their ranking and are shown in the search and in the categories.
Since I thought that the same standards apply in every store, I also used the covers when uploading the English versions. This was a mistake.
Volume one and two of my series were immediately adult filtered.
This means that the books are practically invisible to customers on Amazon. They don’t appear even if you search for the right keywords or enter the title into the search box. Only entering the ASIN leads to the books.
I don’t know how ninety page reads could still be gathered through Kindle Unlimited within five days. Ninety pages are very few, but actually, nobody could have found and read the books. So even ninety pages is a lot under these circumstances.
As I wrote, I contacted KDP support and asked what the problem was and how I could solve it. At this point, I didn’t think the covers could be the problem.
Instead, I had exchanged a few words in the book description to make the text less adult.
It was only when I sent the books to Amazon for re-examination, and they were immediately red-flagged again that it dawned on me.
So I searched again for suitable pictures for covers. This time I made sure not to show any naked skin. I found what I was looking for, created the new covers with Canva, and uploaded the two books again.
As soon as the new versions are online, I will contact the support again and ask them to remove the filter now. If that doesn’t work, I’m really at my wits’ end with my Latin.

So far, all three volumes have sold four in total since I uploaded the first volume six days ago. Yesterday I lowered the price from 2,99€ to 0,99€ on a trial basis. I wanted to see if I could achieve more sales and, thus, a better ranking by lowering the price for several days. But so far the books are selling the same way as at the price of 2,99€. So I will stop the price experiment soon.
With 1063 read pages via KIndle unlimited, I have passed a critical mark earlier than I had hoped.
Since each of my books has 33 Kindle pages, 1063 pages read means that there must have been at least 33 downloads.
So it looks like I will make most of my money in this genre through Kindle Unlimited in the future, rather than through regular sales. I absolutely agree with that, because money is money.
Today’s day
I started the week with the translation of volume three.
In the early afternoon, I uploaded volume three of the series in English. This time I immediately used the new cover, which shouldn’t cause any problems.
I will spend the rest of the day plotting the story for volume four so that I can finish and release the fourth volume in German tomorrow.
I am getting more and more excited about the erotica project. There is hardly a genre in which a new author is discovered faster by the readers than in the erotica sector. Besides, there is no other genre in which German readers accept stories with only 5000 words.
So I will continue and continuously expand my catalog. So you will continue to get insights into my project in the future.
