Summary

An erotica author reflects on the completion of the first volume of a new series, the challenges of maintaining sales momentum, and the strategies implemented to manage writing productivity and mental well-being.

Abstract

The author has finished the first volume of their second series in the erotica genre and observes the natural decline in sales and rankings of their previous series. Despite this, they remain committed to expanding their catalog quickly, having already uploaded the new volume and written significant word counts for both their erotica project and a thriller. The author has also taken steps to redesign covers for the new series and manage their work-life balance by setting strict time limits for non-writing activities. They acknowledge the importance of routine and discipline in their success and plan to continue this pattern, aiming to increase visibility and sales through consistent production and strategic marketing, such as Prime Reading placement for their upcoming thriller series.

Day 21 as an Erotica Author. the First Volume of the Second Series Is Finished. The First Series Loses Momentum.

Erotica is a fast-moving genre. Especially as a new author, you have to expect that the books will sink in the rankings as fast as a stone in the water.

Yesterday there were no new sales of the six books of my first series for the first time in a few days. But KU-reads are still existent for every single book.

The publication of the sixth volume is now four days ago. It is still in the top 300 erotic novels and stories, but it will be beyond the one thousand ranks in a few days.

This is precisely how I had expected it to develop. As a new author with six books, I don’t have such high visibility yet that the books can stay in the rankings for more than a few days. Readers still have to come across my books by accident when searching with keywords. As long as an author does not have at least thirty erotica titles online, the chance of being found by chance is meager, all experts write.

That’s why I continue to work unwaveringly to enlarge my catalog as quickly as possible. So today, at noon, I uploaded volume one of my second short story series. I hope that the book will be released in the German Kindle store in the course of the evening.

Today I wrote another 2500 words for my erotica project and 2500 words for my next thriller.

I also had to design a new cover, because the second series has to be visually different from the first one.

By the way, yesterday I also sent the order for the new thriller cover to my designer so that I can activate the pre-order at the end of the month.

Volume one of the new thriller series will be on sale in Prime Reading in September, so I hope that this will boost pre-orders for volume two.

In order not to lose the momentum of writing the erotic short stories, I have changed my daily rhythm a lot. Sick of looking at my KDP dashboard first thing in the morning, I don’t do that until late afternoon.

And because I was already about to change something, I immediately started to put my foot down. Starting today, e-mails, social media, checking statistics, news sites, and my favorite online game “Forge of Empires” are only allowed between four in the afternoon and eight in the evening.

In the last few days, I have noticed that I have been increasingly stressed out and have to do something about it. I have interrupted my work far too often to look at Facebook or check my e-mails. The result was that I often had to wait ten hours before I finished my work and sat at my computer until after dark.

Today I manage to get off work at half-past four. I will keep that up.

Tomorrow the game starts all over again. First, I will write 2500 words for the next erotic short story, then 2500 words for the new thriller, and then an article for Medium.

Routine may be annoying, but it is the key to success — everywhere.

In this sense: See you tomorrow, dear friends.
