Twenty Days in the Erotica Writing Business. Numbers, Data, Facts
Today I started the second short story series. How did the first one go?
On August 4th, I uploaded volume one of my first erotic short story series to Amazon.
Seventeen days later, I had written and published all six volumes of the series. Each book had a volume of 5000 words. That equals 33 Kindle Unlimited pages.
So whenever someone completes one of my books via Kindle Unlimited, I currently get about nine Eurocents in Germany. If someone buys a book for 2,99 Euro, I earn 1,98 €.
To earn as much with KIndle unlimited as by selling a book, 22 readers must read a book via KIndle unlimited.
That not only seems to be little; it really is tiny.
Why do I still leave my books in KIndle unlimited?
The reason is as simple as it is compelling: Every borrowing process is immediately rated as a regular sale for the ranking. So KIndle Unlimited helps the books to rise in the ranking, allowing more readers to see them. This not only increases the chance of further borrowings but above all of sales.
Kindle Unlimited customers would never buy my books at full price anyway, but they can make the books visible to all other customers willing to pay money.
My earnings
As expected, the direct income from Kindle Unlimited is almost insignificant. It is always announced in the following month how much a pageread was worth in the previous month, but if I took the last month as a benchmark, I have earned about 13.5 Euro with 5029 read pages.
More interesting are the revenues from sales. To date, my short stories have earned 44.13 Euros.
All in all, I came to 57.70 euros within 19 days. (I speak of 19 days because the proceeds of day twenty will be known tomorrow)
That makes a daily income of 3,037 Euros.
Who writes on medium, knows that it is not quite easy to earn more than three dollars a day here. Most people need months for that.
With erotic short stories, I reached these numbers as a complete newcomer within only 20 days.
But these numbers are somewhat abstract. Maybe some readers are more interested in how many people have read my books.
First, we have sales. I can clearly see that 25 people have bought one of my six books so far.
With Kindle Unlimited, it’s not quite that simple. I only see how many pages have actually been read. But it may well be that twice as many people have borrowed the book but have not yet started reading it.
But let’s look at what I can see: Amazon shows a total of 5029 page reads for the six books. Since each of my books is rated by Amazon as 33 pages, this means that at least 152 readers have borrowed one of the books via Kindle Unlimited.
If we now add up the sales and the borrows, within only nineteen days, a total of 177 readers decided to download a book from an unknown newcomer.
If someone tries to achieve these results as a newcomer to thriller, romance, or science fiction, I wish them good luck. This will only be possible, if at all, with a lot of money for advertising.
The more days I spend as an erotica writer, the more aware I become of what a great opportunity I have come across.
However, a word of warning is in order: You should already have a lot of experience as an author because, in the Erotica genre, you cannot afford things like writer’s block or half-heartedness. If you don’t have an ironclad writing routine and can’t write at least 2500 words a day for this genre, you will have a hard time.
The next steps
As announced, I am working on my next series since today. The first 2500 words of the first volume are written, and the concept for the first three volumes is ready.
Tomorrow volume one of the second series will be published. In the back matter of the new books, I will, of course, also refer to my first series. But instead of linking to individual books, I will send my readers to the series page of the first series so that they can find all the volumes at once.
As soon as the sales and borrowings of the first series drop sharply, I will make a bundle of them.
The month of August is not over yet. I am confident that I can finish my first month as an erotica writer with an income of over 50 Euro.
In September, I hope to at least double this amount.
