Day 15 of My New Career as an Erotica Author — Sales Pick Up Speed
Yesterday I thought it was a happy coincidence. Today there is a trend.
In my article yesterday, I wrote that I set a new sales record with my erotic short stories the day before yesterday. After only a fortnight as a new author, I suddenly had five sales in one day. Before that, it was always one a day at most.
I guessed that I was simply lucky and that the sales had piled up by chance on that day.
But this morning, when the final sales figures for yesterday appeared in my KDP Dashboard, I knew it couldn’t have been just luck. Because yesterday I had five sales again.
Compared to eight sales within my first twelve days, this is a clear trend. I had five sales on two consecutive days at the full price of 2.99 Euros.
Within my first fourteen days, I had twenty sales for a total of 2.99 euros. I must emphasize once again that each of the five volumes of my erotic series is only 5000 words long. Erotica is really the only genre in which you can sell such short books for this price.
This particularity becomes even more evident when I compare it with the thriller genre. I have been selling my thrillers for 99 cents almost continuously for years because higher prices immediately lead to an irreversible crash in the ranking.
There were months when I made 6000, 7000 and even 8000 Euros just with 99 cent books, but today I am at about 2000 Euros.
I’m currently selling one of the two thriller series for 3.99 Euro (I lowered the price to 2.69 Euro a few minutes ago). And here it gets exciting.
The thriller series I’m talking about has nine volumes. Each book is at least 50,000 words long. How many of them do you think I sold in the same period that I sold my twenty erotic books?
It’s hard to believe, but it was twenty, as well.
So in the last fourteen days, I’ve made as much money with over 450,000 words from my thrillers as I have with the 25,000 words that make up my five erotica books.
In other words, with eighteen times fewer words, I have earned the same money. That’s completely crazy.
Now the thrillers are a bit older, and the erotica books are all still in the hot new release lists of Amazon and therefore have more visibility, but the difference is pretty stark.
At the moment, I make most of my money with my 99-cent books because I sell a lot of them per day, and I have about fifteen thousand pages read from Kindle Unlimited per day. But when I look at the development of my first two weeks as an erotica writer, I see massive potential in this area.
Today so far
Yesterday and the day before, sales of my erotica books did not start until late in the evening. Now it is at half-past two in the afternoon, and I have already sold two more copies.
I can’t predict whether this evening will go as well as the last two, but I am certainly hopeful.
I didn’t work on the next volume of the erotica series today, but I already announced that yesterday. Today the day belonged to my new thriller so far. However, the motivation for it has decreased a lot since I did the above calculation. I have to write at least 50,000 words by the middle or end of September to finish the book and will probably never be able to sell it for more than 99 cents. This means that my costs for cover and proofreading are only earned back with 5172 sales. Of course, this number will be reduced considerably, because I will earn a lot of money with KU as well, but I still have to sell a few thousand books to make the book profitable.
I will continue to work on it anyway. So I’m going to make a final check for today and turn back to my manuscript.
See you tomorrow, guys. Have a nice day.
