Update From My Journey as an Erotica Author: Still in the Top 100

A week ago, my first short story bundle entered the Top 100 of erotic novels and short stories in the German Kindle Store. The book is still there.

When I uploaded my first erotic short story to Amazon on August 4th, I was full of hope and very skeptical. I had read that you can actually make good money with erotica at Amazon if you write fast and a lot, and the stories appeal to the audience.

Some authors earn between 2000 and 7000 Euros a month, as they write in their guides. I was impressed by that, of course, but I also knew that it would be a long way to get there.

The idea that readers would actually pay 2.99 dollars or Euros for a story that was only 5000 words long seemed too good to be true.

But after a little more than a month, I know that the experts did not exaggerate. People buy my short books. Most downloads, however, are made through Kindle Unlimited. In the first few days, the read pages were only in the double digits, but in the meantime, I’ve had two days with over 2000 pages read, and in the last seven days, there hasn’t been a day with less than 1000 pages read.

My bundle has been the most significant part of it so far. I have put together the first six short stories I published into a bundle and sold it for $3.99 / Euro.

The day after the bundle was published, it entered the German Top 100 erotic charts on Amazon to my great delight.

Since then, seven days have passed. The best rank was rank 15, and today it is still rank 43.

Besides, I have always sold at least one book in the last nine days. This was not to be expected, because it is generally said that you have to have published at least thirty books before you can expect stable sales. So far, I have only published nine books and one bundle.

My last publication was yesterday. Volume three of my second series is now on the market. I plan to make the next bundle with only three books. Firstly, I want to see if shorter bundles sell worse or as well as longer ones, and secondly, I want to try a new niche as soon as possible.

My goal is still to earn at least 100 euros with my short stories in the second month. I have already exceeded my target of 50 Euros for the first month, with 71,86 Euros. If I add in the expected income from Kindle Unlimited, I’d have almost reached my target for the second month with at least €95 in the first month.

But I won’t raise my target, because book sales on Amazon can suddenly drop or rise from one day to the next. The past says nothing about the future in this business. You cannot assume a linear increase in sales.

This week I plan to publish two more stories and the second bundle. It is essential always to have at least one publication among the latest new releases so that readers always have the chance to discover me.

By the way, volume two of the second series was at position 190 of the Erotica Charts this morning. In the meantime, I have managed to place every new book in the top 200 relatively reliably.

It is also interesting that the readers more and more often look at several of my books. On each product page, there is a list of other products that people have looked at, who have also looked at this one. Under almost every one of my books, you will also find more of my books on this list. I see this as a good sign, because the more often a potential customer sees one of my books, the more likely it is that this reader will buy or borrow one of my books.

But just as important as these lists are the last pages of my books. Every time I publish a new book, I edit the so-called Backmatter of the other books. In the Backmatter, I link to my other books and the latest release. The link to the mailing list is also there. Social-Media profiles and a contact email address should also be available in the backmatter.

In this way, every new book will automatically advertise the older books for free and vice versa.

This was the latest update of my new career as an Erotica writer. I will start with the next short story today and get back to you as soon as possible.
