Food, food and more food

Story of the Week
I loved this story by Simona Toma. I hope you’ll love it too. The photos are stunning!
And Simona wrote an equally engaging sequel with more beautiful photos. Some of the best photos I’ve ever seen of Venice!

There’s so much information here and it’s really important to keep up with the Globetrotting news! Don’t tell us you didn’t know!

An unusual entry into our food challenge from Michael DeFranceschi.

A lovely story from Marianne O when she goes to her father’s birthpalce and feels a real connection with the food — it’s in her genes.

Writers Spotlight
Welcome to Globetrotters, Deb aka Bits and bots. Looking forward to some of your travel stories!
Stories from Europe
Mulan writes about these lesser-known Swiss castles. I simply love castles, don’t you?
Anne Bonfert writes about her 5-day hike in the mountains of South Tyrol in Northern Italy. I was exhausted just reading about her hike! Stunning photographs.
Elvie Lins’ visit to Graz, Austria has me wondering why I haven’t visited this beautiful town yet.
Jacqueline Jannotta writes about exploring her ancestor in Ireland. A wonderful story. Do you know any of your family’s history?
Natacha Cryer writes about her honeymoon in Norway, one day at a time. Some interesting information here for those thinking of visiting Oslo.
Gary continues his recollections about his first bus tour around Europe — two days at a time. Reminds me of my first big trip in Europe — 3 months by train.
Here’s Gary’s next couple of days. Some pretty good photos of Venice, even though he didn’t know what he was taking a photo of. One of the disadvantages of taking a tour in my opinion.
Michele Maize (The Sober Vegan Yogi) takes us to Oktoberfest in Munich. What an experience, dirndl and all!
Janice Macdonald writes of a more laid-back lifestyle in southern France far away from the crowds of the Oktoberfest in autumn. Not so quiet in summer!
Janice takes us to Marseille. Sorry, Janice. I don’t think I’ll be adding it to my itinerary. “Second largest city” — generally I’m not a fan of large cities.
Kua Lina writes about free activities she enjoyed on her recent visit to the Azores. A must-read if the Azores are on your bucket list.
Sam Millichap is currently living and exploring Poland. She’s a fearless solo traveller, but has she become too overconfident in her own abilities? What do you think?
Believe it or not Iceland is a European country but let me tell you it’s not like Europe! Read about the last day of my trip to Iceland.
And if you’re not tired of my raving about Iceland, here’s another one! I’ve linked all of my Iceland stories in this one if you’re interested.
Gerad Carrier is off again to a villa in Tuscany with his wife and friends. So jealous!
Shelley Rohm shares more of her visit to Porto with us. If you haven’t visited this beautiful city, add it to your bucket list. There are flights directly from the UK. You’re so lucky!
Midori by the Sea writes about the Wye Valley — the setting for the Netflix series, Sex Education. You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy this beautiful area of the UK.
F. Leonora Solomon writes about her many visits to Paris. She travels a little differently to me. Read her story to find out how.
Tim Ward has left Norway and spends a day — a day! — in Spain on his way to Portugal. He doesn’t know what he’s missing, I’m sure!
If Ophélie Quillier’s story doesn’t make you want to visit Croatia, nothing will. For those people who’ve spent time in Croatia, what’s your take on the country as a whole? It’s on my itinerary anyway…
Jillian Amatt - Artistic Voyages, stop adding more amazing places to my itinerary! 😉 I can’t wait to stay here in 2023.
The Adorable Bulgarian Streets of Veliko Tarnovo
We are in love with this beautiful city!

Charles Amemiya keeps us on the edge of our seats as he hikes to the top of Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park. The photos are beautiful but scary. I’m glad Allison Ditmer didn’t take her kids on this hike!

This is the first of many travel adventures from Allison Ditmer in her new Airstream Basecamp. This is sure to be popular with camping enthusiasts.
S.K. Shandlin takes us on holiday with him to Puget Sound. If the photos are anything to go by, it’s a beautiful area not far from Seattle. Look at that title photo!
Stories from Africa
If you’re looking for a laugh, go no further than Oscar Rhea’s “haunted hotel” story.
Oscar continues the fun with this sobering story before his proposed Kilimanjaro climb.

M T Sutphin continues his trip around Thailand. This is part 5!
Here’s Anne Bonfert’s favourite F destination — Fraser’s Hill — you may recall Gerad Carrier’s recent visit.

Darren finishes his bike tour of Vietnam on a happier note although everything doesn’t go to plan.
Vincent Van Patten writes another beautiful story from his life in Osaka, Japan. You’ll love Vincent’s stories.
Terry Dip tells another story from Japan — actually from Fujisan — not your normal climbing Mt Fuji story.
Osan Fernando writes about places in Singapore that captured her imagination. Fortunately, she has some great photos to illustrate.
Mulan recalls a birthday party on American soil in Japan in two parts. Which continent should I include this in? 😺
Nishan Fuard’s story of his favourite view in the whole world makes me want to visit Hong Kong, but I can’t do Singapore and Hong Kong!
Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands
Melissa Morris’s first overseas trip was to the same country as my first but you would not find two more different experiences if you tried. Great story, Melissa.
Charles Black M.D. visits Kaikōura to see the whales and the seals. What an amazing adventure! And oh, the photos!
Aarti Tailor writes about some beautiful destinations on the East Coast of Australia. I think it’s probably true — at least for me — the grass is always greener — I’m obsessed with Europe. I think I was born in the wrong country!
Travel Tips and Opinions
Travelling by train in the UK. Rose Ernst tells you everything you want to know to do it cheaply.
Ophélie Quillier gives some advice on how not to buy souvenirs you will regret.
Aarti Tailor advises us not to move to London if we hate crowds and busyness. That counts me out, but I do love to visit London.
Here’s another article by Aarti Tailor which looks at the pros and cons of travelling solo as opposed to travelling with friends.
Leah Njoki shares some insider information about moving to another country.
Kua Lina, an advocate of slow travel, explains how a short trip cannot be slow travelled — you wouldn’t get to see anything — you need to be super-organised with all your activities pre-booked if you’re going to make the most of a long weekend.
Kim Baker shares some secrets about taking photos of over-photographed places and how she gets a different angle.
Kim continues explaining her ability to take amazing photos of people — always with their permission.

Travel Stories
Shelley Rohm shares her heart-warming story of why she travels. A beautiful read!

Thank you so much, Globetrotters, for keeping your stories to 10 minutes maximum. You can see you can easily divide your story into two parts or even more. You’re giving us little tastes of your trip without overwhelming your readers. Perfect examples of this are Darren Weir’s Cycling though Vietnam’s Violent Past and Gary’s 28 Day European Bus Tour. Oscar Rhea is keeping us on the edge of our seats by telling us of his climb of Kilimajaro step by step.
Thank you to everyone who submitted stories this week — such an amazing variety. I hope your readers will have as much fun reading them as I did!
And lastly, keep an eye out for October’s writing challenge to be published later today!
