Must See Spots On The Australian East Coast

You don’t want to miss out on these places!

Authors Own- Aerial view of the Great Barrier Reef

My first ever solo trip was to Australia. I went there with a working holiday visa and planned to spend the first few months of my time there exploring and traveling.

The typical trip most backpackers did was the East Coast and as an inexperienced traveler at the time, I decided to follow suit, but I don’t regret it one bit.

I had such a blast. The nature and experiences I saw were unlike any other and to say I had an exhilarating time would be an understatement.

There were a few spots in particular that completely blew my mind. Here are just a few of them.

Magnetic Island

Authors Own- Florence Bay, Magnetic Island

This was definitely one of my favorite spots in Australia and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the East Coast.

To get to Magnetic Island, you have to take a short boat ride from Townsville.

The island is so picturesque and you are able to walk around and discover all the different bays it has to offer.

I was also lucky to see a Koala bear in the wild, which really reinforced the feeling of being in Australia of all places. We spent the day hiking around the island and stopping at a few of the bays to sunbathe and chill.

The Whitsundays

Authors Own- Whitsunday Island

The Whitsundays is a group of islands off the coast of Airlie Beach. There are many ways to discover these islands.

The tour I chose involved a stay on one of the islands and it was unbelievable. It was like a sliver of luxury amidst my backpacker trip.

The days were spent exploring the islands, swimming, and snorkeling, and the evenings were spent partying on the island.

We visited Whitehaven Beach where the sand consists of 98% silica and it was so soft to the touch.

I was also fortunate enough to skydive over the Whitsunday Islands which was one of the best things I have ever done in my life! We also got incredibly lucky as 2 Humpback whales swam up to our boat, even our guides said they had never seen anything like it.

Noosa

Authors Own- Canoeing on the Everglades

This was one place on my East Coast trip where I felt like I regretted not spending more time there.

Noosa is another picturesque stop on the coast and I really loved the relaxed and chilled-out vibe it had.

One of my days there was spent going to the Everglades. We went canoeing and had a barbeque, but after spending hours canoeing my noodle arms were exhausted!

After returning to my hostel, I headed to the beach nearby to catch the sunset and I remember this sunset being a spectacular one.

Byron Bay

Authors Own- View walking up to the lighthouse

Most people have heard about Byron Bay even if they haven’t visited Australia. I was one of these people so this was a must on my list.

It is known for being a “hippie town” and a great place for surfing and this isn’t untrue. But I really liked the vibe here too it was very laid back.

The hostel I stayed at was really funky and I slept in a huge tipi. I also later discovered that the Inbetweeners 2 movie had been filmed at that hostel.

My favorite part of my stay in Byron was going up to the lighthouse to catch the sunset. The view the whole walk up was incredible and we were also able to spot dolphins occasionally jumping out of the water.

The lighthouse is a popular spot to catch the sunset so it was pretty busy, but the sunset did not disappoint. I also took a day trip to Nimbin which is known for its “green” culture if you know what I mean.

Fraser Island

Authors Own- Driving on the beach on Fraser Island

I went on my tour to Fraser Island from Rainbow Beach. This was another tour that lasted a few days.

There was a huge group of us and we were split into smaller groups that would go into a 4x4 Jeep, which we each took turns driving. I never thought I would drive a 4x4 on a beach but there I was doing it like I was Lara Croft. It truly was a unique experience.

The days were spent exploring the island, one spot was called Champagne Pools which is named after the fizzy champagne-like effect the water created when it crashed over the rock pools.

Another great spot was Lake Mckenzie where we all swam despite it being freezing cold that day. Our nights were also spent partying, then we retreated to our tents for a few hours before waking up to explore again.

Great Barrier Reef

Authors Own- View over the Great Barrier Reef

I can’t mention the East Coast of Australia without mentioning one of the most famous places in the world. I managed to see the Great Barrier Reef up close and personal and from the air too which were both incredible in their own way and were such different experiences.

It was amazing to see it from above where I was able to actually see all the different coral reef formations and the changes in ocean colour.

When I took a tour to the Great Barrier Reef to snorkel there, I was unfortunately unbelievably hungover, but I wasn’t alone. The whole ride out, there was always someone vomiting off the side of the boat, myself included. But hey, at least the fish ate well that day!

Snorkeling in the reef was healing though, and this was something that was on my bucket list. It felt amazing to be able to be immersed in something so natural, surrounded by coral reefs and tropical fish. But it was also sad to see the colour of the reef fading too due to environmental changes.

There are so many beautiful spots on the East Coast of Australia, well in Australia in general to be honest. This trip will always be close to my heart as it was my first ever solo trip, and I was able to experience so many amazing things, things I had never in my life experienced or seen before.

These are places I definitely would not miss if I were visiting Australia and if I ever return, they are places I would revisit too (and probably not drink so much!)

I hope this has inspired you to add these places to your bucket list!
