Crazy Road Trip With My Mother to Mexico City

Long Trip to Mexico City

Several years ago my parents were living in Mexico City for my father’s job, while I was living in Los Angeles. They sent us some money to buy them a car, which we did. Then, my mother flew to Los Angeles.

She wanted to buy several things that were hard to come by in Mexico City. She gave new meaning to the “shop til you drop” phrase. We spent about three days going to different stores.

My boys were 9, 7 and just under a year at that time. The boys and I went with her back to Mexico City, then we flew home.

Bribing Guard at Border Crossing

She did not want to cross the Mexico border at Mexicali as the trunk was loaded with the goods she had purchased. She thought they would make her unload the trunk and maybe not let her take the electrical items.

So, we crossed at Sonoyla, Mexico, and Mom was ready. We stopped at the border and the agent walked over. She opened the trunk as she slipped money into his hand. He promptly closed the trunk, and we hauled our asses out of there.

It seemed like we drove through the desert forever, and we only saw one lone coyote running.

Mom Locked In Bathroom Stall

We stopped at a diner for lunch. Mom could speak limited Spanish, and I spoke even less. She went into the ladies room, and we were waiting at our table. She didn’t come back for quite a while, so I decided to check on her.

I walked into the ladies room and said Mom. She said, Pam, I can’t get out of this stall. Somehow the simple lock stuck. She had been trying to get the lock to flip up.

I went back into the diner, and I found a waitress. I just about pulled her into the ladies room, but then she understood. She couldn’t open the door either, so she got the manager. He got a ladder and was able to get it open.

By this time, I am laughing hysterically. It was so funny! We couldn’t even talk due to our laughter about her being locked in the stall.

We got to the table and we were both laughing, but we did manage to get our lunch.

We spent the night in Mazatlán in a nice motel. The water that came out of the facet looked black, which freaked out my son. There was plenty of bottled water to drink however.

Beautiful Guadalajara

We got to Guadalajara and stayed in a nice hotel. They had a swimming pool, so we all enjoyed swimming and playing in the pool. The food was good too, especially breakfast.

Guadalajara is a beautiful city, and we really liked it there, but we had to leave to head to Mexico City.

My Dad was so glad to see us. He really loved his grandsons.

Touring Mexico City

We went to Teotihuacan pyramids (city of the Gods), which also offered tequila tasting. We went to some interesting markets, and I ate way too much of the delicious food offered in that city.

We walked around the Plaza de la Constitución, which is a large area. There is the baroque Catedral Metropolitana de Mexico of the conquistadors where we saw historic murals. We also saw the beautiful Templo Mayor, which is an Aztec Temple from the 13th century.

The time passed too quickly as we had a wonderful time. Our plane ride home was uneventful, and the boys loved it. We never took any pictures on this trip, which was very unusual.
