CAMPING

Why Airstream Camping in the Driveway Is Fun

Create your adventure at home

After almost a year of waiting for our Airstream Basecamp travel trailer to arrive, it’s finally here!

My husband and I rented an Airstream Basecamp in the summer of 2021 to go camping in Michigan with our two kids.

After our one-week adventure, we discovered renting an Airstream definitely made camping more fun. And we wanted more of it.

So we decided to buy an Airstream Basecamp for future camping trips.

Why wait for retirement, right?

The dealership called to let us know ours was ready, and we spent the entire time camping in the driveway over the weekend.

How It Started

When my kids got off the bus, they saw our silver home parked in the gravel drive waiting for them to open and explore.

Both of them were excited.

We had been waiting for almost a year for our Airstream to be ready with production being delayed at Airstream headquarters in Jackson Center, Ohio. There was quite an increase in demand from the pandemic.

My daughter went running with joy as her mouth dropped and her eyes got wide with excitement at the sight of our Basecamp. Her little bookbag was practically bouncing off her back as she sprinted to see the inside.

Mom, can I go get my stuff?

She moved her Barbies in, and we grabbed pillows and her favorite blanket.

Since we were at home, it was easy to hook up with water and electricity. I say easy, but it’s my husband who did everything to get things running.

All I had to do was show up and bring some yummy snacks. Which I was totally down to do.

No Travel Time Needed

With the Basecamp parked in our driveway, we didn’t have to rush and go somewhere else to be entertained.

Our adventure started right away at home.

The kids seemed content settling in. My son played video games as he talked to friends through his mic, and my daughter got lost in her own world creating a cubby home for her dolls.

Meanwhile, my husband kept running around making sure everything was set up right for our overnight stay.

As newbies, we didn’t want to miss anything.

The two lounge areas were converted into beds for the night. Both my kids had fun setting up their forts in these spaces underneath.

I’m convinced kids don’t need big spaces.

Most of the time the smaller nooks seem to be more intriguing to them. At least that seems to be the case in our Basecamp from what I’ve seen so far.

Conveniences Right At Home

The benefit of camping in the driveway is your house is only steps away. If you forget something, it’s no big deal. You just go back inside to grab it.

I made several trips back and forth that first night.

When we needed a garbage bag for trash, I cut across the backyard and went through the sliding door to get what we needed. After discovering we didn’t have flashlights, I turned right around and walked the same path again.

It wasn’t an inconvenience.

Running back and forth felt like a practice run. Camping at home was a test to see what I would need for our upcoming trip away in a couple of weeks.

We had dinner inside our house and enjoyed brownies and popcorn in the Basecamp. I know it will be no time until crumbs will be scattered through the new interior, but that’s life with small kids. At least the material is easy to wipe off.

I keep telling myself that It’s better to get it dirty and have fun using it.

Camping Entertainment

Getting to sit around a fire and get cozy always seems to be one of the things I look forward to most about camping.

Not so much the smoke, but a warm and constant flame is relaxing.

We have a fire pit not far in our backyard from the Basecamp. Unfortunately, the wood was still too wet from the previous rain, so all we had was smoke and no flames.

A campfire just wasn’t in our future.

As it grew darker, we decided to set up a movie instead. All four of us snuggled together on the larger bed in the back.

With the silver interior, it doubled quite nicely as a screen for our projector. There were a couple of spots where the light from the video stream hit the aluminum weirdly, but it didn’t seem to bother us.

We turned on Big Daddy with Adam Sandler, then soon realized that movies in the 90s sure did cuss a lot more than we remember as kids.

Oh well, so maybe it wasn’t the best parenting choice for our movie that night.

Thankfully, the kids were tired and ended up snoozing fast once we stopped the film.

Camping in the driveway turned out to be fun and different.

Although it’s also exciting to see new places, you don’t have to always go far to create your own adventure.

Sometimes it’s changing up the scenery right in your backyard.

Our weekend in our silver home was a success — questionable movies, no fire, and all.

I can’t wait to do it again.
