Let’s Get Spooked!
October Writing Challenge
Anne Bonfert set the challenge for us…
And Jillian Amatt - Artistic Voyages wrote the first spooky story — and it’s a good one. Luckily this story won’t be up for prizes in the competition. Oh, sorry — there are no prizes!
This is a true story that happened to me more than 20 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Here’s a few more “ghostly” adventures I’ve been subjected to. I really do love my family!
And if you love reading scary stories, read this story by JoAnn Ryan. Let me tell you, those photos were enough to scare the pants off me.
And if JoAnn’s story wasn’t enough, here’s an even scarier one from Foxtrot | The Travel Writer. Read at your own peril!
Read Osan Fernando’s scary tale of her visit to Alcatraz. If you haven’t been, you may not want to go!
Sara Burdick has a knack for finding spooky places. Read this one.
Araci Almeida scared the living daylights out of me with this Portuguese legend.
Serhii Onkov visits a fascinating part of the world I’m unfamiliar with. A great story! The photographs are spookily mesmerising!
Keep ’em coming! I haven’t had nightmares yet!

Stories of the Week
I couldn’t decide! I only picked two but I could have chosen twenty! Such wonderful personal, well-written stories. Thank you so much for sharing them with us here at Globetrotters.
What a wonderful story from Daniel Carlson | Meandering Naturist.
This is a must-read by Tim Ward. Thank you for sharing, Tim.
Stories from the Americas
A beautiful story from Kua Lina! The photos are breathtakingly beautiful!
Jodi Monroe takes us ziplining in Puerto Vallarta. I didn’t know what ziplining was until recently. We used to call them flying foxes.
Elena J writes about the spectacular places she’s been to in Chile when she lived there. We haven’t had many stories from Chile so this one was a real treat!
Allison Ditmer writes about Arches National Park in Utah. The photos are stunning! The US sure has some amazing national parks.
Shelley Rohm writes about a disastrous 1993 road trip to New Orleans. How things were so different “way back then”!
Michael Rhodes’s story is a sad one for him personally, as well as for the world at large. How can we let this unique part of history suffer an ignominious death?
Kua Lina was fortunate enough to spend a weekend hiking in this most beautiful area of Canada. Her photos are simply stunning!
Aarti Tailor shares some of her experiences when she moved to Canada. It’s surprising to me that Canada is not more like the UK, but that’s because I’m from Australia.
James Baxter writes a beautiful story of his visit to Joshua Tree. Another one of my favourites this week!
Scott-Ryan Abt visits NYC but stays in Brooklyn, not Manhattan. A different New York experience. I can’t get enough of New York stories!
Stories from Europe
Natacha Cryer writes about her honeymoon in Norway — one day at a time. I feel like I am there with you Natacha.
Gary continues his bus tour into Croatia and Slovenia. I really want to visit those caves.
LucianoSphere takes us to Sardinia. If you like the beach and swimming like I do, it sounds like an ideal destination.
Here’s a story from my last trip to Europe pre-pandemic.
Anne Bonfert, intrepid hiker, finished 5 days of extreme hiking with her hiking boots held together with tape and rope. My admiration for this girl just grows and grows!
Here’s another hiking story from Simon Whaley. More beautiful photographs!
I loved this story by Sara Radenovic. Read it and answer her question.
Jay Davidson writes about an amazing coincidence. A one-in-a-hundred million or more chances of this happening!
Araci Almeida writes about a part of Portugal off the beaten track. Unbelievably I’ve driven through some of this part of the country with my daughter and son-in-law. Fortunately, he speaks Portuguese. Not many people in these rural areas speak English at all.
Tim Ward overnights in a monastery and has me entranced. I want to know all about it! I’ve already chosen one of Tim’s stories as a favourite so I cannot choose another.
Dan Carlson | Meandering Naturists writes about the thermes in Germany. I think he’s our resident expert on naked spas.
Darren Weir’s aptly titled story is guaranteed to make you hungry or make you yearn for a Parisian adventure, or both!
And Pinar K. tempts us even more with these German delicacies.
Ophélie Quillier writes 3 specific hints to enjoy your trip to Croatia even more. Things like this are really helpful to know! Thanks! You learn from experience or other people’s experience.
Michael Burg, MD (Satire Sommelier) is moving to Europe. If we are lucky, he will be entertaining us with his travel adventures every week.
Stories from Africa
Here’s Part 9 in Oscar Rhea’s Kilimanjaro adventure. And it’s not the lions, crocodiles, hippos or snakes that bite!
Oscar continues his story of the climb of Mt Kilimanjaro. I’m not sure what happened to Part X.
Anne Bonfert writes about her favourite places by letters of the alphabet. Here’s her H story- the Huab River in Namibia. Sam Millichap is the brains behind this writing prompt and Anne and I have followed suit!
Stories from Asia
Tiani Travels goes swimming with these amazing creatures. Have you ever had this experience?
Terry Dip relates a story from his travels crossing the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
Here’s another funny story from Terry.

If you’ve ever been caught in a tropical rainstorm, you’ll sympathise with James Baxter in this story.
Linda Ng hasn’t finished with our September food theme. Here’s another fantastic food story…have you ever heard of a pineapple bun?

Byron George writes of his first visit to Manila 15 years ago.
James Baxter writes why he must learn Thai, and fast!
Foxtrot | The Travel Writer writes with passion about his hometown. I have fond memories of sipping a Singapore Sling on the wide verandah of Raffles Hotel during a tropical afternoon thunderstorm.
