Summary

The author, Linda Ng, shares their experience with the most delicious food they encountered in Hong Kong: a freshly baked pineapple bun, a popular sweet bun known for its pineapple-like crust rather than its filling.

Abstract

In an article titled "Here’s The Best Thing I Ate In Hong Kong," Linda Ng surprises readers by revealing that the most memorable dish from their trip is not an elaborate or exotic dish, but a simple bakery item known as the pineapple bun. Despite its name, the bun typically does not contain pineapple; its name derives from the resemblance of its sugary crust to a pineapple. The bun can be enjoyed plain or with various fillings, with the author preferring it without any stuffing. Pineapple buns are ubiquitous in Hong Kong bakeries and are considered a staple. However, Ng points out that while delicious, these buns are not particularly healthy, as they are high in calories and sugar. The article includes personal anecdotes and photos of Ng enjoying the bun, and it concludes with an invitation for readers to connect with the author and support their writing.

Here’s The Best Thing I Ate In Hong Kong

It’s a pineapple bun. A fresh pineapple bun, piping hot and straight from the oven!

Were you thinking of elaborate dishes, something exotic, or noodles when you read the headline? I probably would have thought the same too! In reality, it’s something so simple. The most delicious thing I ate in Hong Kong was something from the bakery — a pineapple bun!

What’s a Pineapple Bun?

It’s a popular sweet bun. Despite the name, it usually doesn’t contain any pineapple! Rather, the name is derived from the crust on top, which resembles a pineapple.

It’s also common to eat it with other stuffings, such as butter, luncheon meat, red bean paste, or custard cream. I like it plain!

Where Can You Get A Pineapple Bun?

Pineapple buns are very popular in Hong Kong, you can find them in any bakery. You can also buy them in any Chinese bakery store. They are a staple item, so they are not hard to find.

It just depends if they were made good enough! 🤤

No joke — people were fighting to get the pineapple buns here! (photo provided by Linda Ng)

Are Pineapple Buns Healthy?

Like most bakery items, pineapple buns contain a lot of sugar, salt, dairy, and flour. According to Nutritionix¹, one pineapple bun is 400 calories and 18 grams of sugar! 😵

The recommended daily intake of sugar is about 25 grams². If you have one pineapple bun, you’re over half the recommendation already. Plus, do you know it takes me at least 3 hours of badminton to burn off 400 calories? Not that I’m complaining about the badminton.

But my point is that pineapple buns aren’t particularly healthy. I guess we know that most delicious foods aren’t usually on the healthy spectrum!

So, have you ever tried a pineapple bun before? Here’s one last photo of me, enjoying a scrumptious bun!

I’m way too happy here! (photo provided by Linda Ng)
