Reflections On My March Earnings

Important Mistakes, Takeaways & Next Steps.

Although I usually do not write about my Medium earnings on this platform, but I’d like to attempt to do so for the first time, simply for the following reasons:

- To serve as a space to reflect on my monthly earnings, mistakes and successes for the month.

- Helps me set goals and share it with my followers to hold myself accountable and allow others to feel motivated as I share my journey.

- In an aim to inspire and motivate my fellow writers on the platform, especially those struggling or starting out on Medium.

March Goals

Let’s start off with what I had in mind for the month of March.

  • My main goal was to build my Medium blog by writing consistently at least every 2–4 days. Consistency for me was a problem as I had so much on my plate the last few months.
  • Another goal was to embark on short-form content consisting of short pieces ranging from 1 to 2 minutes long. I have avoided short form since I started on Medium back in November 2020 but finally decided to give it a go in March.

I had no list of article topics, but I wanted to write intuitively to encourage a state of flow.

What Was Achieved In March

  • I achieved my goal of writing consistently during the month of March. In total, I wrote 26 articles, compared to 4 articles in February and 24 in January.
  • 11 out of 26 articles were short-form.
  • 3 out of 26 articles had over 70 views.
  • In total, I made $42 for the month of March through the Medium Partner Program with one referred member.

Reflections For March

  • The short form experiment was enjoyable, and it allowed me to write more freely and deliver short yet detailed information to the readers.
  • However, I was expecting earnings to be a little higher as I produced more content, yet I am happy with the overall result.
  • I focused on a few different niches from entrepreneurship, psychology, and artificial intelligence.
  • I did engage in a mini-series about Artificial intelligence in Sales and created 4 short-form articles that were all connected to the niche. I felt like that helped my stats and engaged the readers who enjoyed technical articles more than reflective ones.

Mistakes I Did In March

  • Focusing purely on short-form articles and not attempting to write more in-depth pieces to balance out the month. When you are starting something new, for experimental purposes, don’t go all-in at once. Try writing a few and see how you go.
  • Simplified my headlines.

Next Steps For April

  • For the month of April, I really hope to continue with the short form experiment. I aim to produce 1 short-form piece a day which will total of 30 short-form pieces.
  • I aim to pay more attention to compiling more interesting headlines.
  • I would like to also write 1–2 in-depth long-form articles under the niche of side hustles I have tried, sharing my mistakes and takeaways for beginners. I feel like short-form alone will not work and there is a need for a balanced combination of both long-form in-depth articles as well as short-form simplified pieces.
